[YEP-DC] Director of Student Support (2016-2017) at Director of Student Support (2016-2017)

The Director of Student Support will collaborate with members of the middle school leadership team to ensure implementation of rigorous instruction for all scholars. The Director's primary responsibilities will include coaching of instructional team members, managing school-wide IEP processes, managing the Response to Intervention process, managing the continuum of supports for all scholars, facilitating the student study team, providing impactful professional development, and ensuring alignment of school programming with student needs. The ideal candidate for this position will be knowledgeable of special education services and instructional practices, outcomes oriented, organized, strategic, and solutions oriented.

Job Requirements

All leaders at DC Scholars PCS serve on collaborative teams and support school transformation by partnering with colleagues. The Director of Student Support will lead in the following ways.

Talent Leadership

  • Manage and develop special education teachers and other instructional team members by providing individualized, actionable feedback based on evidence from observations and data reviews;
  • Ensure continuous improvement of instructional practices by monitoring team members' incorporation of feedback into practice;
  • Implement a rigorous and consistent evaluation system aligned to network requirements in order to drive toward results;
  • Identify staff development needs to prioritize delivery of results-oriented professional development opportunities;
  • Guide special education teachers and staff in providing accommodations and modifying instruction to students with IEPs and 504 Plans;
  • Support with regular reviews of outcomes to continuously identify, recognize, and retain effective team;

Operational & Strategic Leadership

  • Engage in annual strategic planning and implement a plan for implementing effective practices for supporting all scholars;
  • Develop and oversee case management for students with IEPs or 504 Plans and ensure provision of appropriate accommodations and modifications;
  • Manage the building's special education software program, EasyIEP, and assist with federal, state, and local reporting;
  • Ensure compliance with the requirements of IDEA, section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 along with federal, state, and local laws;
  • Coordinate the procurement of third party service providers, provide daily oversight and evaluate the effectiveness of the providers
  • Adopt network-wide practices and maintain connections with regional/network teams to collaboratively problem solve and improve practices at the school level;

Instructional Leadership

  • Collaborate with members of the school leadership team to support staff in effectively planning and implementing exemplary instruction aligned to student learning needs and Common Core and/or state standards;
  • Assess quantitative and qualitative data to monitor outcomes and continuously improve the quality of instruction for all scholars;
  • Review lesson plans and provide targeted feedback to ensure delivery of high quality instruction aligned to required supports for studen
  • Manage the Response to Intervention process by identifying student needs, developing or assigning specific interventions, tracking progress, evaluating outcomes and regularly communicating updates to ensure implementation of supports aligned to student needs;
  • Guide teachers and staff in adapting lessons and providing interventions to support all scholars;


Family and Community Leadership

  • Communicate with family members about student needs, supports, and progress to ensure partnership focused on student growth;
  • Support team members in sharing key messages with families and tracking communication to ensure consistent engagements and reviews of student progress;
  • Maintain relationships with family members and other stakeholders to build investment in the school's vision;
  • Proactively and intentionally engage community partners and seeks out community resources to enhance the school program;
  • Foster an environment where staff understand the specific needs and strengths of our community;

Culture Leadership

  • Ensure implementation of school wide routines to maximize instructional time and support for all scholars;
  • Foster a joyful school community where all scholars experience a sense of belonging;
  • Champion consistent and fair implementation of positive reinforcement and consequences aligned to school expectations;
  • Uphold high expectations for accountability by communicating clear expectations for staff and students

Personal & People Leadership

  • Partner with the school leadership team and other stakeholders to develop a vision for student achievement and align all decisions to this vision;
  • Model belief in the potential for ALL scholars to achieve at high levels and continuously invest stakeholders in the school vision;
  • Collaborate with the school leadership team to support change management and provide opportunities for team members communicate questions and potential solutions for supporting all scholars in the context of school transformation;
  • Operate with a high degree of emotional intelligence, effectively communicate with stakeholders, and actively seek feedback to continuously improve;
  • Operate with a high degree of personal responsibility for outcomes and demonstrate resiliency in the face of challenges;


  • 5+years of instructional experience in special education;
  • Experience leading a team of educational professionals and achieving excellent results;
  • Degree in Special Education, or a related field preferred;
  • Certification in special education, supervisory or administrative certificate(s) preferred;
  • Demonstrated skill in building relationships with a variety of stakeholders;
  • Record of achieving ambitious results;
  • Strong organizational and coordination skills;
  • Passion for developing and implementing systems and procedures to make every minute count;
  • Excellent strategic thinking skills;
  • Ability to thrive in a goal-oriented, fast-paced environment;
  • Passion for school transformation;
