[YEP-DC] New Post: Middle School Teacher Challenges Nation to Take a Stand Against Shorthand

Teachers are tired of seeing texting acronyms like LOL, OMG, and IDK cropping up in formal essays and classwork. An LA-based middle school teacher is challenging all her students, and people across the country, to use only proper grammar in their writing. Our blogger Monica Gray sat down with Heather Shotke, the teacher behind gramMarch, to talk about students' writing, the impact of shorthand on our society, and teaching middle schoolers. Read all about the challenge here!

[dcab-l] Fwd: For Sale: Deneve Resonator Guitar

Begin forwarded message:

From: "Pollak, Edward" <EPollak@wcupa.edu>
Date: March 18, 2016 at 10:22:15 AM EDT
Subject: For Sale: Deneve Resonator Guitar

FYI............................. Please contact Bob Allen about this. I know nothing other than what is included ion Bob's note below.

Edward I. Pollak, Ph.D.
Professor Emeritus of Psychology
West Chester University of Pennsylvania
Husband, father, grandfather, bluegrass fiddler & biopsychologist............... in approximate order of importance

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FROM:  Bob Allen (robertallen2@comcast.net)

1986 Dick DeNeve resonator guitar (dobro) for sale.  I have owned this dobro since it was new in 1986 and now I am ready to sell it.  I don't play it anymore, and haven't in several years.  Dick DeNeve is a custom builder from the Syracuse, NY area, and has been building and selling acoustic instruments for several years.  This is a beautiful playing and sounding dobro, aged perfectly over 30 years of minimal playing.  The condition is 9.9 of 10 and is in showroom condition.  It is made of koa wood with a quarterman cone, and will hold it's own in any band setting.  It is number 129, stamped on the back of the headstock, along with the builder's name.  Plenty of volume for any situation.  Comes with a custom hardshell case, and picks, capo, and bar if you want them.  I have enjoyed this dobro a lot over the years, but someone else needs to own it now.  Getting older now, you know, and time to thin the herd.  The last time I talked to DeNeve was 4 or 5 years ago, and these models then were $1400.  I'm looking for $1000 and I can drive to meet a serious buyer.  If you're a dobro enthusiast or serious player looking for a dobro that will do the trick, this is it.  30 years old (new) coming from a smoke free environment.  The pictures (see attachments) say all that needs to be said.  Thanks for looking.

If interested, contact Bob Allen at robertallen2@comcast.net.

If you think you'd like to know more about DeNeve instruments, his e-mail is richard_d13132@yahoo.com.  He has no website that I know of.

[YEP-DC] New Blog Post on Recess!

In February, District of Columbia Public Schools announced sweeping changes to its teacher evaluation and training systems – but how deeply did they engage teachers in the process of designing those systems? Charlie Cummings, Senior Director of the America Achieves Fellowship for Teachers and Principals, writes in a guest post that DCPS may not have involved teachers and principals as deeply as they could have. He argues that giving educators a say in crafting the policies that will impact teaching and learning is critical, and he thinks DCPS could set an example for stakeholder engagement that other districts around the country would follow. Read more in his post, Are Teachers Just a Table Decoration, or Do They Have a Seat?
