The Late Boomers return to 49 West with a toe-tappin' mix of honky-tonk, swing, country blues and bluegrass. The band features three former members of Buck Stone & the Bucktones, DC area veteran singer/songwriter Jeremy "Buck" Stone Schuhmann on guitar/vocals, harmonica, mandolin, and sax, New Orleans transplant (and cousin of famous fiddler Matt Glaser) Eric Glaser on upright bass, and ace multi-instrumentalist Tom McLaughlin (OK Twisters, Mama Tried), on mandolin and guitar, with Annapolis' own Elizabeth Melvin (Mama Jama) on percussion/vocals. The vocals are tight, the strings are swinging and the atmosphere is hot when the Late Boomers come out to play.

[YEP-DC] Program Associate, Science Position with Achieve

ABOUT ACHIEVE

Achieve is an independent, nonpartisan, nonprofit education reform organization dedicated to working with states to raise academic standards and graduation requirements, improve assessments, and strengthen accountability. Created in 1996 by a bipartisan group of governors and business leaders, Achieve is leading the effort to make college and career readiness a priority across the country so that students graduating from high school are academically prepared for postsecondary success. When states want to collaborate on education policy or practice, they come to Achieve. At the direction of 48 states, and partnering with the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers, Achieve helped develop the Common Core State Standards. Twenty-six states and the National Research Council asked Achieve to manage the process to write the Next Generation Science Standards. Achieve has also served as the project manager for states in the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers, which are developing next generation assessments. And since 2005, Achieve has worked with state teams, governors, state education officials, postsecondary leaders and business executives to improve postsecondary preparation by aligning key policies with the demands of the real world so that all students graduate from high school with the knowledge and skills they need to fully reach their promise in college, careers and life. POSITION SUMMARY

The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) are K-12 science standards created through a collaborative, state-led process. The standards are based on the Framework for K-12 Science Education, which was developed by the National Research Council, the staffing arm of the National Academy of Sciences, and identifies what students need to know and be able to do to be a functional citizen, which includes being scientifically literate and an effective member of the U.S. workforce.

Reporting to the Director, Instructional Support, the Program Associate is responsible for supporting Achieve's work with standards in science in general—and around state support for adoption and implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards in particular. The Program Associate will focus on supporting various national and multi-state initiatives designed to expand Achieve's policy agenda in science.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Program Associate's responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Achieve Agenda in Science

Support the overall work of science standards adoption and implementation, which includes assisting with the planning and execution of institute convenings, state visits, content development work and analyses to NGSS Network states.
Assist in developing tools to support NGSS Network states.
Provide input to the overall plan for research to inform Achieve's science agenda.
Support the communications work of the Science Initiatives unit.
Provide support to the development of grant proposals and initiatives designed to support this work.

State Services and Research

Develop analyses, write reports, and ensure quality and accuracy of final products (in coordination with a team of content consultants).
Organize communication of findings of Achieve analyses to state teams via conference calls, work sessions, in-state and national meetings as needed.
Provide support as requested throughout research studies to include identifying critical resources, drafting and reviewing reports, analyzing data, and identifying findings.
Attend briefings and read newly released reports to generate summary analyses to share with select staff.
Performs other duties as assigned

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
Internal: Science staff, State Policy and Implementation Support staff, Operations Staff

External: State Agency staff, Project Consultants, partners, contacts

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
N/A

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor's degree, plus two to four years experience in the education policy arena. A Masters degree may take the place of two years of experience.

Education/education policy and experience required; either at the state or local level is a plus
Knowledge of national and state education policy and reform processes required.
Proven research, writing, and communication skills.
Strong diplomatic skills in forging partnerships and effective working relationships internally and externally. Demonstrated ability to work productively and collegially with individuals and teams, including the ability and experience interacting with state representatives, project consultants, vendors and others.
Knowledge of the Next Generation Science Standards a plus.
Proven ability to manage multiple short and long-term projects in a fast paced environment.
Effective time management skills
Persistence, resourcefulness, drive and ability to work proactively.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, under considerable pressure and tight deadlines
Passion for education
