[YEP-DC] Save the Date for the 2016 YEP-DC Policy to Practice Conference

Save the Date: Saturday, March 19th

YEP-DC Policy to Practice Conference

"Our City as a Learning Lab for Urban Education Reform"

YEP-DC is excited to announce its 4th Annual Policy to Practice Conference, "Our City as a Learning Lab for Urban Education Reform" will be held on Saturday March 19, 2016, from 8:00AM - 4:30PM. The Conference will take place at the beautiful Cardozo Education Campus located north of U Street Corridor (1200 Clifton St NW, Washington, DC 20009).

Our City as a Learning Lab will probe both achievements and challenges around improving education outcomes of all students in grades Pre-K-12 in Washington, DC.  Expert local facilitators will approach topics at the classroom, school, and system level with an analytical lense, sharing strategies as well as measurable outcomes from initiatives. Facilitators and attendees will engage issues endemic to urban education, such as variance in school equity and achievement gaps between student subgroups. In sum, the Conference will unearth lessons learned from the past decade of reform in DC and interrogate how these lessons can inform urban education efforts across the United States in the future.

Over the past three Policy to Practice Conferences, 1,000 young education professionals and over 50 organizations have convened to engage across policy, practice, and research sectors to learn, and push what's possible in education.

This year's Conference will be a unique and invaluable professional development experience with endless opportunities for networking, workshops, engaging discussions, and opportunities beyond the one-day conference.

[dcab-l] Woody & Dad sing "The Friendly Beasts"

Friends of Christmas Present:

This is the seventh year my son Woody and I have recorded a Christmas Carol.  Others we've done in years past:

2009   "Star of Bethlehem"

2010   "Silent Night"

2011   "Silver Bells"

2012   "Blue Christmas"

2013   "White Christmas"

2014   "Winter Wonderland "

This year we've recorded "The Friendly Beasts".   Woody did the recording, mixing, and sang harmony vocal; Dad sang lead and played the guitar and bass.  I used an 09 Martin Marquis and my fretless Rob Allen bass.

"The Friendly Beasts" is a traditional Christmas song about the gifts barn animals give to Jesus at the Nativity.  It originated in 12th-century France, set to the melody of the Latin song "Orientis Partibus".  The current English words were written by Robert Davis (1881-1950) in the 1920s.  The song is also known as "The Song of the Ass", The Donkey Carol", "The Animal Carol", and "The Gift of the Animals."

Burl Ives included the song on his 1952 album “Christmas Day in the Morning”.  Since then, it has been recorded by many other artists, including Harry Belafonte, The Harry Simeone Chorale, Johnny Cash (Belafonte and Cash use the title "The Gifts They Gave"), RisĂ« Stevens, Danny Taddei, Peter, Paul & Mary, and Sufjan Stevens.  Brian Stokes Mitchell in 2008 sang this song with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, complete with the donkey, cow, and sheep "voices".  Garth Brooks recorded it on his 1992 platinum album “Beyond the Season”.

Woody and I got our version from the Louvin Brothers; their version is compelling; they grew up around barns and animals, and their touch is simple and earthy.  Oddly, they sing Christmas Day instead of Christmas Morn, which interrupts the rhyme with “Horn”.  Also, they changed the familiar “I said the dove” motif to “Thus said the dove”.  Still, their version is undeniably saturated with heart.  Woody and I did our best.

Please enjoy, and we wish everyone a happy and healthy Holiday Season!

Hi everyone,

I was a guest on icrvradio.com this morning - but the station was temporarily off the air, so if you tried to hear it live, you couldn't. We recorded about 45 minutes, and you can hear it at 6 pm tonight, or tomorrow at 10 am and 6 pm. It was a lot of fun. I talked with Leif Nilsson and David Williams (the station manager) about my career, my new ensembles and more, we played a song from the upcoming Sommers/Rosenthal family album, and I played a few songs live. I think you'll enjoy it! Go here to hear it -  http://www.icrvradio.com

On the other, he's the parent of two DCPS students, navigating DC's often complicated process to get his children the best possible education. [dcab-l] Martin Guitar Christmas: Blue Christmas

Friends of Christmas Present:

Here's a new Christmas song, from a live performance.  The ”All Mixed Up” band:

Barry Wendell                 Rhythm Guitar and Vocals (bella voce)

Ed Schaeffer                   Martin Guitar and Harmony

  Greg Nelson                   Bass

The song was first recorded by Doye O'Dell in 1948, and was popularized the following year in three separate recordings: one by country artist Ernest Tubb, one by musical conductor and arranger Hugo Winterhalter and his orchestra and chorus, and one by bandleader Russ Morgan and his orchestra.

Other recordings: Billy Eckstine, The Beach Boys, the Browns, Damian McGinty (from Glee).

However, Elvis Presley cemented the status of "Blue Christmas" as a rock-and-roll holiday classic by recording it for his 1957 LP Elvis' Christmas Album.  And, in 2008, a duet of the song by Elvis Presley and Martina McBride was featured on the album Christmas Duets and reached #36 on the US Country Chart.

In this version, after Barry actually begins playing, you can hear me apply my capo to the Martin…   To listen,  click below:

[dcab-l] Lucketts Bluegrass Christmas Jamboree

You're invited to a Christmas Bluegrass Jamboree!!

The Luckett's Community Center will host the annual Luckett's Bluegrass Christmas Jamboree on Saturday December 19th.  Santa Claus will be making a special appearance and many of Luckett's Popular performers will mix and match their talents to perform the Bluegrass favorites you know and love along with many Christmas favorites as well.

The Jamboree is made up by Jay Armsworthy-guitar and vocals, John Brunswyler-banjo, Keith Dill-fiddle, Tom Gray-Bass, Tara Lindhardt-mandolin, and Tom Mindte-mandolin & vocals.

From California, Maryland, Armsworthy normally performs with his traditional Bluegrass group, Jay Armsworthy & Eastern Tradition through the tri state area.  Mindte plays mandolin and makes his home in Rockville, Maryland which is also the home of his own rising record label, Patuxent Records.  He is also the leader and mandolin player with the Patuxent Partners as well as the Christmas Jamboree's banjo player, John Brunswhyler.  Multi-instrumentalist, Dill plays with the West Virginia band, Patent Pending.  His Appalachian old-time fiddling adds the right touch to the Christmas Jamboree.  Lindhardt has taken first place in many contests and can be seen working regularly in duets, trios, and full bands in bluegrass, old time, Irish, and Swing jazz styles of music.  She play's mandolin and will be dressed in a pretty Christmas bow!  Joining the Jamboree Band for the first time is the famous, Tom Gray, on bass.  Gray is known as the original member of the Classic Country Gentlemen and founding member of the Seldom Scene.  Gray has played with many, many bands throughout the world.  He will be a great asset to the program.

It will be a fun evening of music, laughter, and many surprises.  You just never know what this group will come up with in their family style performance!

The show begins at 7:00 pm with the doors opening at 6:00.  The Luckett's Community Center is a smoke and alcohol free environment.  Sandwiches, snacks and drinks are available for sale.  For more information, tickets, and directions, go to www.luckettsbluegrass.org or call 703-771-5281.  You can purchase tickets at the door for $15.00 per person.

The Luckett's Community Center is located at 42361 Luckett's Road in Leesburg, VA.
