#3  In Memory of Ben Eldridge  –  Country Pickin’

Scene from Afar is a re-issue of my 1987 vinyl album of all original material, featuring

Seldom Scene musicians.  Country Pickin’ is my own song creation, and another opportunity

to remember Ben Eldridge on Banjo.

 

Phil Rosenthal begins this cut with a lead guitar solo, and his picking can be heard throughout the

song.  Lou Reid sings harmony on the chorus, and all the instruments, including the fantastic

fiddler Carl Nelson, have a chance to “stretch out” during their solos.  The last solo is a duet with

both Phil and Ben: an exquisite duet we may have never heard!

 

This song’s last line: “The Good Lord, He likes Country Pickin' too!” is a confirmation to Tom T Hall’s

line in “The Year Clayton Delany Died”:  “Could be that the Good Lord likes a little pickin' too”

Seldom Scene musicians.  This banjo cut was a Ben Eldridge contribution.  All album

cuts contained Washington DC references, and I named Ben’s selection “Banjo Whip” (in

reference to a governmental “Whip”.)

Hey folks, good things are happening at DCBU for the community. Carolyn's got some great ideas and plenty of mojo to make them happen. Jump aboard and check it out and join on on our on-line (zoom) board meeting on Wednesday, August 7 at 8 PM. Just respond below and we'll get you the info to join in. 

We meet monthly on line, to plan and discuss our current and future activities. 

All perspective's welcome- Players, listeners, fetstival go'ers, concert attendees- all purveyors and consumers invited.

Dear Bluegrass Enthusiast, As a young girl, I had always dreamed of the joy of sitting together with folks and playing music. I discovered the bluegrass community was all that and more! I fell in love with the voices and the stories, the phenomenal flatpicking, fiddling, & rolling, and the high lonesome sound.
