[dcab-l] Recordings with Seldom Scene Pickers

Music Lovers:

In the early 90s, members of the Seldom Scene played on an all original

Rattlesnake Hill album called "High Lonesome Sound".  We recorded this song,

“Rim of a Wheel”, penned by my friend Fred Moore from Philadelphia.  It's a

heavy gospel song with Holiness imagery.

The song has a "question and answer" format, with answer lines simply starting

at a different song verse;  for example, verse II is used to "answer" verse I.

Consequently, you'll hear lines sung in the "Question parts" subsequently stated

in the "Answer parts".

The only accompaniment is my Martin D-76, and Phil Rosenthal's mandolin.

Quite stark, but powerful imagery.  This was recorded by Peter Bonta at Wally

Cleavers in Fredericksburg, Va.

I hope you enjoy it!

(As always, turn up, and headphones are preferred)

[YEP-DC] A Friendly Reminder that True Change Happens at the Local Level: YEP-DC Members Weigh In On Priority

YEP-DC recently conducted a survey to find out how members feel about current issues in education, and the results indicated that the vast majority of us are dissatisfied with the status quo. In addition to frustration with the way education issues are being addressed (or not addressed) in the presidential election, members expressed concern about how poverty and inequality limit the promise of even the most effective classrooms. But despite these challenges, members reported feeling optimistic that local efforts to counteract them can be successful. Read more about the survey results and how DC organizations are tackling poverty and inequality to help students succeed on Recess!

[dcab-l] House Party - Missy Raines & the New Hip, Thursday, Nov. 10, 7:30pm (2nd notice)

Music at the Abbey
Missy Raines & the New Hip
Thursday, Nov. 10, 2016
7:30 pm ET

Hosted by Archie and Pris Warnock
Bowie, MD
Phone 410-923-1009 or email at warnock@awcubed.com

Suggested Donation: $20

No need to reply if you cannot join us for this event.

I've changed the start time for the house concert slightly to give
people a little more time to get home and out the door, perhaps even
grab a bite to eat. We'll have the usual snacks and drinks, of course.
It's just over a week away - the perfect time to check that calendar and
come out to hear some fabulous music. It'll help you recover from the
long election season, no matter what your political proclivities.

We hope you'll join us at the Abbey as the fabulous Missy Raines & the
New Hip will join us for our next house party.

Missy Raines (http://missyraines.com) is a 7-time recipient of the Bass
Player of the Year Award from the International Bluegrass Music
Association and a former member of the Grammy-nominated Claire Lynch
Band and the acclaimed duo Jim Hurst & Missy Raines. She is one of the
most respected, popular, and trailblazing figures in bluegrass. Her rich
pedigree reaches from legends such as Mac Wiseman, Kenny Baker, Josh
Graves, and Eddie & Martha Adcock, to contemporary artists such as Peter
Rowan, Laurie Lewis, Dudley Connell, Don Rigsby, and the Brother Boys.

What people are saying about Missy Raines:

* "Raines is not only a superb bassist but also an excellent singer, with
a matter-of-fact, low-key delivery that's sometimes hushed, sometimes
seductive, sometimes channeling a simmering unease." – New York Music Daily

* "The New Hip, along with bands such as the Avetts and Churchill, add
their brilliance to the swiftly growing collection of Newgrass artists
that have brought southern music to the mainstream." – Deep South Magazine

No Smoking - No Pets (ours prefer only human visitors)
Please RSVP by Tuesday, November 8.

You can guarantee your seat by sending a check in advance. Details
provided with your reservation.
