[dcab-l] Ed's Original Song: "Ode to Jennie Wade"

Songwriters & Music Lovers:

Here’s a studio recording of an original Ed Schaeffer song: "Ode to Jennie Wade", written in 2012

and recorded in 2021.  An “Ode” is a lyric that respects or celebrates the worth or influence of

another; in this song, Jennie Wade.

Mary Virginia Wade of Gettysburg, Pa, during the Battle of Gettysburg on July 3, 1863, at the age

of 20, became the only direct civilian casualty, killed while baking bread, by a stray bullet through

her door.  A music lover at Cactus Flatts, Jim Riche, suggested I write a song about Wade,

whose story begs endless fascination.  Poetic license allowed my bending her story into this song.

Musicians:

Peter Sittner             Bass

Tad Marks                Fiddle

Ed Schaeffer            Vocal & Martin Guitar

Ed

                  Ode to Jennie Wade  D-

Ed Schaeffer 2012

Chorus: Where's your rebel Jennie Wade, Jennie Wade?

Not some battlefield, not some grave

Not a breath left in the breeze

Not a whisper in the leaves

I'll bake bread for you my dear, before the battle starts

We'll be safe within our home, a fire is in the hearth

Was that a crack come from the fire? Your knock upon the door?

Below the handle, by the lock, I feel a hole's been bored

A bullet slices through the door, then deeply through her breast

A fountain red of blood pours out, a fire within her chest

He falls first from battle's doom, then she from bullet stray

His last thought: her baking bread, so still their bodies lay

[dcab-l] Hey folks, DCBU's honoring Leon Morris with a Birthday Bash this Sunday!

Leon Morris has had a great influence on our community as a performer and instrumentalist over a long and distinguished career.

If you haven't attended any of our bluegrass birthday bashes, starting with Bob Perilla,  with subsequent events honoring Carol Swam, Tom Gray, Mary Cliff and Tom Knowles,  you've missed some great times and music.

As bluegrassers, we truly stand on the shoulders of giants, and DCBU has gathered the community to give them some well deserved local love and thanks. Its great to see old friends get reacquainted after years apart, as well as the younger crowd connect with the folks who helped to make this great musical community what its is.

They turn out to be memorable.

Bring an instrument and jam before the stage show. The event starts at 4, but the doors will be open before then.

Our host band- King Street Bluegrass- will start the stage show at  6 with a set of super bluegrass and will have guests sit in.

It being Leon's 89th birthday celebration, we'll have cake at 6:45ish so you dont want to miss out on that!

Leon and friends (Associates, we'll call them!) will take the stage for a set after cake.

Its FREE and its for Leon. Join in on the party and lets do this right!

Who: You, and your DC Bluegrass friends. Free show, great music. Spread the word.
What: DCBU's Birthday Bash for Leon Morris
When: Sunday, February 25, starts at 4 PM
Where: Earp's Ordinary, 10420 Main Street, Fairfax City
Why: To gather the community to honor our elders and educate the youngsters!

This caps off a great month of bluegrass- DCBU's FebFest- that has seen over 17 local and touring bands sprinkled over 4 weekends at Earp's Ordinary. Were not dont tho!

Our final weekend not only features Sunday's Birthday Bash, but great music on Friday (Sweet Yonder/Bob Perilla and Big Hillbilly) and Saturday Patuxent Partners/Bourbon Moon).  Get thickets here: Earp's Ordinary Event Page

Re: [dcab-l] So what would it take to cross the river??

Food for thought...Pictrola has a pretty good social media presence. Maybe that makes a difference?

First of all let me say a big thank you to everyone who showed up to hear my Old Town Tradition band and the excellent Shannon Leigh and The Good Bygones. This was as fine an evening of bluegrass as you could ask for in a sparkling new venue with a great sound system and an excellent stage. We were all treated as valued musicians and the performances reflected that love of all things musical.

Having now played with four different music groups on the Earp's Ordinary stage perhaps I can bring perspective to how this is all going. The venue has an excellent menu and many in the area go there to dine. To some the music is nice but secondary and they typically leave at the first break. I've seen this dynamic before. Kudos to those from Maryland who brave the bridges to see what the hype is all about. This takes fortitude and determination. I played on Tuesday night at The New Deal Cafe in Greenbelt MD and from my house in Woodbridge VA the hellish commute took over an hour and a half. Not a pleasant drive... Wish I were retired so I could visit Maryland venues more often. Weekday commutes are not for the weak of heart. perhaps a DCBU bus is in order. Or at least a carpool list on the website where people can find a ride across the Potomac. I hear a water taxi may become a reality sometime in the future.

The only sellout audience I've seen so far at Earp's Ordinary was the excellent local bluegrass band, Pictrola. A sellout at Earp's is 120+, at least until more tables, chairs, and staff are added. An audience of 75 is typical for performances. While advance reservations are preferred, you can pretty much count on just as many day-of-event walk-ins which will can double your audience.

I'll continue to support Earp's Ordinary and the DeMarco's because they are in it for the love of music. As musicians you cannot underestimate the boost that you get from being appreciated for what you do. I've got a few good videos taken at Earp's Ordinary that you can find on YouTube. You will see musicians doing what they love for people who appreciate their art.

Based on the number of videos, subscribers and viewers, your "might not
be worthy" might have had a full house of Maryland attendees.

Settle down and look perhaps within including the possibility that you
might have been overly ambitious. Perhaps stronger acts or even perhaps
the venue was "wrong" as nice of a place that it obviously is.

I'm not criticizing. I'm suggesting you broaden your search for answers.

[dcab-l] Southern Maryland Bluegrass-High Fidelity

The Southern Maryland Bluegrass at the Elks series brings us High Fidelity Bluegrass band on Sunday March 3, 2024, at the Calvert Elks Lodge #2620 in Prince Frederick, MD.  The doors will open at Noon and the performance will start at 2:00 PM.  Cuzin's N Harmony will open the show.

Many folks remember the Bluegrass records from the 1950s and '60s. The power and soul of that music has won the hearts of people across the globe. Only a few bands have come along in recent years that draw their influence from that classic era of music's history. High Fidelity is a group that has a love and dedication to that style.  The name alone says it all: "HIGH FIDELITY"! Many record albums from the '50s and '60s bears those words.

Shortly after their formation in early 2014, the group took 1st place in the International Band Championship at the Annual "Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America" (SPBGMA) Awards that same year.

The band consists of five outstanding musicians and singers who are steeped in the sounds of tradition. Jeremy Stephens, guitarist and lead vocalist for the group, who also plays the banjo has worked for the world-famous gospel group The Chuck Wagon Gang, on the television show Ray Stevens' Nashville, and most recently with Jesse McReynolds & the Virginia Boys. Corrina Rose Logston, fiddler and harmony vocalist, has worked with many of today's traditional-based Bluegrass performers including songwriter, Jim Laurderdale.  Kurt Stephenson also handles banjo duties and harmony vocals. He comes from the greater west Tennessee area. Vickie Vaughn, who recently won the 2023 International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Bass Player of the Year  plays upright bass and contributes vocals.  Vickie has worked in recent years with Patty Loveless and Ricky Skaggs.  Multi-instrumentalist and harmony vocalist, Daniel Amick plays guitar and mandolin and  is a recipient of IBMA's 2019 Instrumentalist of the Year Momentum Award.

If you like the sound of traditional Bluegrass music of the 1st generation performers like Don Reno & Red Smiley, The Stanley Brothers, The Louvin Brothers, and Jim & Jesse, then High Fidelity is a group is not to be missed.  They put on a pure and clean sounding show that draws much of their inspiration from the forementioned bands as well as a host of many more artists from the same era.  They have been described as the new Johnson Mountain Boys.  High Fidelity is so warmly received and widely loved by every audience they perform for.

As an addition to the show, Cuzin's N Harmony (cousins Jay Armsworthy and Woody Norris along with Troy Jones) will open the show as they celebrate the release of their long-awaited CD.

The show takes place on Sunday March 3 at 2 PM.  The Calvert Elks Lodge is located at 1015 Dares Beach Road in Prince Frederick, MD.  Tickets will be $23.00 per person and sold at the door beginning at Noon.  Children under 12 are admitted free with a paying adult.  Food will be available for sale by the Calvert Elks Lodge beginning at noon until 2:30.  A 50/50 raffle and door prizes will be offered.

The remaining shows in the series will include Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out on March 24, and Dave Peterson & 1946 will be closing out the series in April.  For more information, please call 301-737-3004 or go to www.somdbluegrass.com.

[dcab-l] For Valentine's Day: Honeysuckle: "Sweetest Gift" at the Appalachian Jubilee

Songwriters & Music Lovers:

The very touching song "Sweetest Gift, a Mother’s Smile" was written by James B. Coats, a staff

writer for the Stamps-Baxter Music Company; he is a member of the Gospel Music

Association’s Hall of Fame.  Born in 1901 in Summerland, Mississippi, he composed other

beloved songs: “Where Could I Go?”, “A Wonderful Place”, and others.  The first recording was

by James and Martha Carson in 1946.

Sweetest Gift" has been covered by Linda Ronstadt & Emmylou Harris Duet, the Judds, Hazel

Dickens and Alice Gerrard, the Gibson Brothers, and the Blue Sky Boys.

My partner, Carol Hausner, now in Vermont, was a Takoma Park, Md. musician I met at the old

"Sligo Creek Sunday Jam", early 1980s.  Carol won 1st place at the 2009 MerleFest

Songwriting Contest.  Please acquaint yourself with Carol's work: http://www.carolhausner.com/

     Sweetest Gift, a Mother’s Smile

One day a mother came to a prison

To see her erring but precious son

She told the warden how much she loved him

It did not matter what he had done

Chorus:

She did not bring (bring to him) parole or pardon (pardon free)

She brought no silver (brought no gold) no pomp or style (none to see)

It was a halo (halo bright) sent down from heaven's (heaven's light)

The sweetest gift, a mother's smile

She left a smile you can remember

She's gone to heaven from heartache's grief (free)

Those bars around you could never change her

You were her baby and e'er will be

Re: [dcab-l] So what would it take to cross the river??

Hey everyone, thanks for the perspective. That was the hope initially, and you've come through with useful, considered information, that will be considered by the board as we move forward. There are no simple answers, but the information conveys what's important outside of our small group on the board.

Part of the legacy of DC bluegrass is definitely wrapped up by the venues that have supported the music through the years. The atmosphere and personality of each made lasting impressions on all, maybe even paid a couple of bucks to the musicians too.

VA or MD, local bluegrass venues need to be identified and supported. That there is a 'new' one in Fairfax is notable, and our involvement there was a bright idea that gained traction, mainly because DCBU has not really been presenting much live music. The board wanted to do something about that in a meaningful way.
Earps fit in our needs, and we were happy to give them some business during the reopening.

To be clear, my initial question might be best addressed by having shows in a MD venue. That is not lost on us either, and we will add this to the mix going forward. I was/am hoping that the bridge does not present an issue for folks wanting to go in either direction, as its going to take all for the hosting venues to continue to prioritize bluegrass acts.

As for DCBU, we've got a lot wrapped up with this series and hope that our MD buds will consider crossing the divide and swinging by for one. So far the crowds have been robust, but fall short of sellouts.

I'll finish by saying that DCAB-L remains a great resource for long and short form communication. Cheers to Debbie for keeping things going. Likewise to you all for readinging along. Comments always welcome.

If theres something that you want to share privatley, call me at 202.438.0490 anytime.

Just putting this out there, as Im thinking that the perceptions - or reality- of MD/VA being  separated by a WALL rather than a bridge is going to sink us all.

Week 2 of the DCBU FebFest at Earps Ordinary was super on stage:  Old Town Tradition (a VA band) early and Shannon Leigh and the GoodbyGones (Md band) put on a great show. Both are to be congratulated.

But the house was about 1/2 full (my non official estimate: 75 folks). Many folks left after the first set. When a 'show of hands' conveyed that no-one left was from MD,- yup nobody- it was concerning.

With the following events a worthy hall pass-
Tomorrows Robeson fundraiser (Get Tix info here); Ok, we understand (but show up next week!)
Nothing Fancy show on Thursday
That Anthem show (which might not be worthy of a hall pass)

Were those the reasons?

Perhaps you'd share your take with a response.

Earps went through an extended remodeling and is looking to support acoustic music. Thats why DCBU tried to help out.

Re: [dcab-l] So what would it take to cross the river??

My wife and I made our first visit on Saturday night. Both bands were great and my Smashburger was a two-hander. The only detraction/distraction was the amount of conversation emanating from the bar area, and even some of the seated patrons. Although we had a good center-front table, we will opt for a spot farther away from the bar next time. If they are able to establish a listening room environment for acoustic music performances, they will gain points in my book.

Last night that place was packed and happening and very fun indeed. Not an empty seat.

I can't believe I'm weighing in on this but I gotta say it...one of the sure-fire ways for a venue/show to become unsuccessful is to start telling people it is. It's a weird human nature mind thing that happens. Create the buzz that magic is happening there (which I'm sure it is... especially after last night!)
Just my .02 cents...

Please weigh in!
