[dcab-l] Ed's New CD: Scene from Afar

Ed’s New CD: Scene from Afar

This new CD is a re-issue of a 1987 vinyl release Ed Schaeffer recorded mostly with the Seldom Scene

at Wally Cleaver Studios, Fredericksburg, Va. by Peter Bonta.  Hence, with a re-issue in 2021, the

play-on-words for the new CD title: Scene from AfarDownload  from any Streaming Site.

Phil Rosenthal, the Scene’s guitarist and lead singer of that ’87 era, shines on mandolin (and some lead

guitar work!).  Phil wrote 2 of the 3 instrumentals: “Presidential Breakdown” and “Rock Creek Ramble”.

And one of the all-time best bluegrass banjo pickers and original Seldom Scene member, Ben Eldridge,

wrote the 3rd instrumental: “Banjo Whip”, and drives the whole CD with his playing.

Lou Reid, formerly with Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver and the Ricky Skaggs Band, a recent addition to the

Seldom Scene in ‘87, sings all harmony.

In addition to these three, Super-fiddler Carl Nelson, for many years with Bill Harrell & the Virginians,

contributes some unbelievable licks!

While recording at Wally Cleaver, Dobro picker Fred Travers, in ‘87 playing with Ed’s band Rattlesnake Hill,

attracted Ben’s interest, and became a replacement for the Scene’s Mike Auldridge.

Willie Oldes, Rattlesnake Hill’s bassist, also joined the effort, and Ed Schaeffer provided 6 songs, vocals,

and rhythm guitar.  Songwriter Fred Moore contributed a gospel song: “Rim of a Wheel”.  So, the CD contains

all original material.

For the new CD Scene from Afar, the format was changed from the vinyl issue, with fresh artwork throughout,

but with original pictures from that ’87 cover.

Enjoy!

Ed Schaeffer
