Music Lovers & Songwriters:
This banjo instrumental by Flatt & Scruggs & the Foggy Mountain Boys was
released on their vinyl album Foggy Mountain Banjo in 1961.
Ground Speed was written by Earl Scruggs, and is a staple among bluegrass banjo
pickers. Later in Scruggs’ career, as a pilot, he often flew to various performances. As
any pilot, he understood the term “Ground Speed” to mean an aircraft's speed relative
to the ground. And so, the title.
Musicians are listed below. This Cactus Flats performance highlights Keith Arneson on
the speeding banjo, and Tom Grey on bass. Keith played banjo for the Navy Band
Country Current for 24 years, taking over for Bill Emerson. And Tom, on bass, is a
bluegrass Hall of Famer twice (!), once with the Country Gentlemen and then also
with the Seldom Scene.
This thing comes at you like a torpedo, so hold tight!
