Nice article, Ted. Maybe you'll have the chance to write followup pieces on all the other banjo pickers that others have mentioned.
I have a couple of comments from a personal perspective. Big Hillbilly Bluegrass (Bob Perilla, Tad Marks, Ira Gitlin, Merl Johnson, and Mike Marceau) had the great fortune to spend January 2010 touring western Africa as part of a State Department cultural exchange program. Wherever we played Ira would always mention that the roots of the banjo were in Africa.
When the premiere of "Throw Down Your Heart" was held in the DC area, Bela and one of the musicians in the film performed a 20 minute set afterwards in the theatre. I invited him to a local bluegrass open jam afterwards, but he had to decline and catch his flight back home.
