[dcab-l] Orrin Star: Bluegrass Rhythm Guitar Workshop in Marshall, VA, Saturday

Saturday November 5, 2016
Stillwaters, Marshall, VA ~ 4-6pm
Bluegrass Rhythm Guitar Workshop with Orrin Star
Bluegrass guitarists have developed some of the most potent
and interesting rhythm moves ever heard—but they are seldom
taught in an organized way. This workshop takes a hands-on,
detailed and entertaining look at them. Learn the cool bass runs
and strums and how to apply them. If you strum folk, bluegrass
or country music on an acoustic guitar this workshop is for you.

Details:

Orrin will also be doing a concert at 8pm.

[dcab-l] Prison Song: Old Chain Gang

Music Lovers:

This song was originally called “Free From The Old Chain Gang”, written by seminal

Bluegrass/Country singer Mac Wiseman, recorded originally in 1962, by Capitol Records

on “Bluegrass Favorites”.  It was recorded again in 2003 on the Bear Family Records.

My cover was recorded live, on stage, at the Appalachian Jubilee, a live syndicated

country show from a theater in Chambersburg, Pa.  It contains that “big stage sound”,

and hard to believe it was produced with only 3 musicians:

            John Bruce      Banjo

            Ed Schaeffer   Guitar and Vocals

            Fill In               Bass

We used an unknown bass player that show, but we were able to maintain a deep

groove, despite his unfamiliarity with the tune.  This version has more drive than Mac’s

original, which remains, to this day, a bit obscure among his bastion of songs.

Banjoist John Bruce summons an applause late in his first solo, then again from his third

solo.  I hope you enjoy the big stage sound we produced that evening, by turning up

your listening volume;  just click below:

http://rattlesnakehill.org/Web_Music/edsmusic.html

Enjoy!

Ed

[dcab-l] Bluegrass Musicians needed for production of Foxfire at Bowie Community Theatre

Bowie Community Theatre is doing a play that involves bluegrass music and is need of musicians.  I’m passing on the information below for those that might be interested.

Tim Kruzic

MUSICIANS NEEDED FOR FOXFIRE PRODUCTION AT BOWIE COMMUNITY THEATRE:
FOXFIRE is a play written by Susan Cooper and Hume Cronyn about an Appalachian family and the changing times. It is not a musical per se, but rather a play with music. There is one scene in the play where the main character, Dillard, and his bluegrass band are playing a concert.  We are in need of a violinist/fiddle player, double bass/or bass guitarist, and someone who can play either the banjo or mandolin. It's probably a total of 10 minutes on stage a night. However, one of the things we were trying to put together was to have "the band" play some selections during intermission. (another 15 minutes). We have a total of 10 performances, 4 Technical rehearsals, and probably 4 rehearsals prior to Tech Week. The show opens on Dec 2nd and plays for three weekends. Bowie Community Theatre is a non-profit organization, and I know they don't have a huge amount of money; so the compensation is really only a stipend of around $100-$200 total per musician for the whole commitment. If you are interested, please drop our director a line at frankpas1@verizon.net.

[dcab-l] HELLO TO ALL OF MY LONG TIME ROOTS AND BLUESLETTER FRIENDS

It has been over 8 years since I posted to this email list and this will be the last and only time I use it in this way. I wanted to let everyone know of something new I am taking on.
While I have paid attention, for the past 8 years I have not had much to do directly with the area's music scene save for the effort to get Nap Turner Way dedicated in the city. That is about to change. A number of you have seen this announced on Facebook within the last two days.
As you know I have always championed the knowledge that the greater DC area is an incredibly unrecognized contributor to MUSIC across the spectrum. I am moving that effort  to the radio!

WOWD-LP Takoma Park Community Radio 94.3FM is providing that opportunity and it will give me the chance to explore the incredible legacy the DC area has in it's history across the music spectrum.
The name of the show is DC - Roots of MUSIC! and will totally be filled with songs that have a DC connection and allow an exploration of the contributions of our musical sons, daughters and institutes to almost anything heard today. The great musician, author and speaker Daryl Davis will be joining me on this great adventure. Everything from Ellington to Wray, from Byrd to Cline, Gaye to Gatton, Root Boy to Rubinowitz, Bluegrass to Go- Go, HFS to WGAY and the Howard to Folkways. Getting to have fun romping around in the playground full of WAMA and DCLM Hall of Fame artists will be big fun. I will be calling on a number of you to help tell this great story of our regions music. You were there. We want to hear.
Is DC an incredible music town? NO QUESTION!
WE ARE THE CHOIR
WE ARE ALL ALREADY SAYING AMEN
ITS TIME TO GET OUT BEYOND THE CHOIR
JOIN US AND SPREAD THE WORD!
There is a Facebook page DC - Roots of MUSIC! where we will post info about the show and where you can post comments and suggestions. I hope you will sign on and like the effort. A web site is coming soon.
For those beyond the broadcast signal reach you can catch the show streaming at takomaradio.org
I am especially excited about the debut show. It is dedicated to the regional hits that were possible in the days before the clearchannelization of our nations airwaves. Area performers who hit the charts here but not so much elsewhere around the country. Of course the king of the hill in that regard is the Hangmen (Reekers) What a Girl Can't Do which knocked a Beatles song out of the #1 spot on local radio. It expands from there.
Check out this list of "local" performers I have collected. For some it will be easy to guess the song. For others you may be surprised.

[dcab-l] SIDELINE

TOTALLY STUNNING is all I can think of to describe the performance last night in Herndon, Virginia by SIDELINE as part of the Weekend Bluegrass Concert Series.  AMAZING and absolute mastery of their instruments and with vocal harmonies that have to be experienced to be believed.  They are super tight in performance and oh so crazy between songs - great funsters.  And to top things off they are truly nice folks too so an evening with these guys is like a jam session in your own living room.  Many many THANKS to Steve Dilling, Jason Moore, Skip Cherryholmes, Nathan Aldridge, Brad Hudson and Ashby Frank for an outstanding show and for being just plain good people.  Thanks also to all our patrons for your continuing support of the Weekend Bluegrass Concert Series.

A big "Thanks!" from me as well. Not only was Bill quick on updates or changes, he always caught my mistakes when my typing got faster than my eyes could proofread my submissions!
Take a well deserved break, Bill. I'll buy you a beer the next time we meet.
