Double header of Bluegrass Sunday March 2
Award-winning, traditional first-rate Bluegrass at its best! The Junior Sisk Band is among the most reliable hard core Bluegrass talents in the business and bringing it to the Southern Maryland Bluegrass series at the Elks along with a special guest.
Concert number 5 in the series of Southern Maryland Bluegrass hosted by Jay Armsworthy continues to bring today's national known singers and pickers in Bluegrass music from all genders of life. The Junior Sisk Band along with Red Camel Collective will take the stage on Sunday March 2nd starting at 2 pm at the Calvert Elks Lodge, located at 1015 Dares Beach Road in Prince Frederick, MD.
Junior Sisk is widely recognized as one of today's top Bluegrass vocalists and a constant reminder that traditional Bluegrass is still alive and well. From the Blue Ridge mountains of Virginia, his Bluegrass roots run deep. Having a father as a songwriter and a mother who sang, Junior first learned to play guitar around age 14.
His early influences included The Stanley Brothers, Larry Sparks, and Dave Evans, but he often credits the Johnson Mountain Boys with inspiring him to pursue Bluegrass professionally. Sisk first made his mark in Bluegrass as a songwriter in the early 90's, penning classic Lonesome River Band songs like "Game (I Can't Win)" and "Tears Are Blinding Me." In 1998, he joined 2 bands, Wyatt Rice & Santa Cruz and Blueridge and helped define the sound of driving, modern traditional Bluegrass. Sisk founded his own band and called them Ramblers Choice, making a successful career with Rebel Records. In 2012 an album titled, "Heart of a Song" won him the spotlight for the IBMA Album of the Year award. The album also included a single titled, "A Far Cry from Lester and Earl," which won him the 2012 Song of the Year Award from the IBMA. Sisk was furthered honored when he was named 2013 IBMA Male Vocalist of the Year. Since this time, Junior Sisk has received several IBMA and SPBGMA awards.
Most recently, Junior has supported his band in another sideline project called the Red Camel Collective. It's a new Bluegrass group that performs dates outside the Junior Sisk Band. They chose the name "Red Camel Collective," to pay homage to Junior Sisk. He recommended the name of the band by one of his hit songs called "The Man In Red Camels," a song about a man reminiscing of bygone days and fondly remembering an old man plowing his field while wearing a pair of Red Camel brand overalls. This new band's style is quite eclectic, ranging from traditional bluegrass and classic country to fresh modern sounds all their own. Through out Junior's show, he grants them the opportunity to shine on their new sound.
The show will begin at 2:00 pm with doors opening at Noon. Tickets are $23.00 per person and under 12 free with a paid adult. Hamburgers, Hot Dogs with all the trimmings will be available for sale from Noon until 2:00 pm by the Calvert Elks. Tickets are available at the door. The remainder of the series brings singer/songwriter Donna Ulisse and her band The Poor Mountain Boys making her 1st time appearance on March 23rd. Closing the Southern Maryland Concert Series will be 10-time award winning Bass Player of the Year in Bluegrass music, Missy Raines and her band Alleghany.
