[YEP-DC] Training Posting: Student Learning Objectives (SLO) Summer Intensive- Stipends Included (OSSE)

Student Learning Objectives (SLO) Summer Intensive

Monday, June 30^th - Thursday, July 3^rd

The Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) is excited to extend Local Education Agencies an invitation to join us for the Student Learning Objectives (SLO) Summer Intensive. This four-day training will include professional development sessions delivered by national SLO experts. There will be an emphasis on how SLOs positively impact student learning and teacher excellence. Guidance on developing student goals, setting targets, evaluating progress, and measuring success will also be provided. Teams will engage in daily in-depth planning sessions and will receive extensive feedback on their plans.

If you intend to use Student Learning Objectives as a measurement of student growth during the 2014-2015 school year or if you would like to refine your current teacher evaluation process, we encourage you to join us!

Stipends will be awarded to each team member in attendance. Instructional teams of 3 to 5 persons are encouraged to attend. Please contact Gimari.Jones@dc.gov to register by June 27^th.

The Washington, DC Education Policy Fellowship Program (EPFP), supported through the Institute for Educational Leadership (IEL), is a 10-month program that focuses on education policy, leadership development, and networking. Since the establishment of IEL in 1964, the EPFP has been at the core of the Institute's work to serve as a catalyst for improvements to the education system. IEL's mission is: To equip leaders to work together across boundaries to build effective systems that prepare children and youth for postsecondary education, careers, and citizenship.

The EPFP provides a unique professional and personal development laboratory for applying new insights and cultivating new skills in the areas of educational policy, leadership, and networking. This 10-month professional development program has been fundamental to developing leaders in the education field across the country for more than half a century.

Learn more about the EPFP experience in our brochure and feel free to share this email broadly with your networks. The application page provides more detail about the expectations for Fellows who participate. To ensure that you get into the 2014-2015 cohort, I strongly encourage you to apply before July 31, 2014 (and to secure a discounted rate). Many, many THANKS go to SPECIAL CONSENSUS for a tremendous concert last night at the Weekend Bluegrass Concert Series in Herndon, Virginia. The place was jumping to say the very least with stunning instrumentals and harmony vocals in abundance. Thanks to our patrons too for their continuing support of our concert series. Also, "Get Well" wishes go to bass player Dan Eubanks of Special Consensus who was not able to make the engagement due to illness. Catch this fine band whenever you can as they are truly great musicians, but more importantly, they are just plain nice folks to know.

[YEP-DC] Internship Opportunity: Educational & Development Interns Needed (Stipend Pay)

Education Intern

The education intern supports the implementation of school, community, training and audience enrichment programs. Duties include: scheduling and facilitating workshops, assisting both in-school and after-school classes and residencies, developing teacher and student curriculum guides, coordinating special events and assisting with the daily administrative needs of the Education Department. Successful candidates will have experience in both theatre and education. Approximately 15-20 hours per week. Stipend pay.

Development Intern

The development intern works in all aspects of donor relations and fundraising. The internship focuses on research, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of individual, corporate, government and foundation donors as well as assistance in planning and execution of special events. Interns work closely with the Producing Artistic Director. Responsibilities include: writing, research, meeting planning, event assistance, donor database and daily office tasks. Successful candidates will have excellent writing skills and strong verbal communication ability. Approximately 15-20 hours per week. Stipend pay.

[YEP-DC] Professional Development this Summer: Learn to Share Yoga with Children!

5 ... 4... 3... 2... 1... Summer!

Hope the last day of school was a great one for DC teachers and that folks already off are having good break already. After you've had a chance to catch your breath, I want to draw your attention to a couple of great trainings this summer (and fall) for anyone wishing to share yoga with children.

I've posted before about Yoga 4 Classrooms and the 1 day professional development workshop for teachers wishing to incorporate yoga movement breaks, breathing exercises and mindfulness activities into the regular classroom day. This is a great workshop for teachers, classroom aids and paraprofessionals, school therapists, and any other school staff person who might have the opportunity to share yoga in 30 second to 10 or 20-minute increments in a day. There's no moving desks, removing shoes, or yoga class period required to reap the benefits of yoga and mindfulness for your students.

Thanks to PWP funding, we're actually implementing the full program (professional development for every staff + 10 week residency of lessons in every classroom) in two DCPS elementary schools next year. I'm happy to talk any anyone interested in pursing that.

If you do have the opportunity to share yoga in longer blocks of time or away from a tables-and-chairs setting, the full weekend ChildLight Yoga Teacher Training might be right for you. If you teach after school programming, summer camps, or physical education, definitely check out the full weekend workshop. The basic ChildLight training includes quite a bit of the Yoga 4 Classrooms material and a lot more - games, activities, songs, etc. Also, if you teach preschool or preK and have the opportunity to do movement breaks on a reading rug, that workshop is more matched to your teaching environment and will provide ideas for incorporating yoga INTO your lessons.

Finally, we are launching the ChildLight Yoga Baby & Toddler Teacher Training, so if you are a really early childhood educator this is for you; if you know one, please let them know about this opportunity. Whether you are a parent, childcare professional, or a yoga instructor, if you work with babies or toddlers through 2 years old, this training will provide you with the tools and inspiration you need to successfully integrate yoga-based movement, songs, games, and relaxation into their day.
