[YEP-DC] Save the Date for the 2016 YEP-DC Policy to Practice Conference

Save the Date: Saturday, March 19th

YEP-DC Policy to Practice Conference

"Our City as a Learning Lab for Urban Education Reform"

YEP-DC is excited to announce its 4th Annual Policy to Practice Conference, "Our City as a Learning Lab for Urban Education Reform" will be held on Saturday March 19, 2016, from 8:00AM - 4:30PM. The Conference will take place at the beautiful Cardozo Education Campus located north of U Street Corridor (1200 Clifton St NW, Washington, DC 20009).

Our City as a Learning Lab will probe both achievements and challenges around improving education outcomes of all students in grades Pre-K-12 in Washington, DC.  Expert local facilitators will approach topics at the classroom, school, and system level with an analytical lense, sharing strategies as well as measurable outcomes from initiatives. Facilitators and attendees will engage issues endemic to urban education, such as variance in school equity and achievement gaps between student subgroups. In sum, the Conference will unearth lessons learned from the past decade of reform in DC and interrogate how these lessons can inform urban education efforts across the United States in the future.

Over the past three Policy to Practice Conferences, 1,000 young education professionals and over 50 organizations have convened to engage across policy, practice, and research sectors to learn, and push what's possible in education.

This year's Conference will be a unique and invaluable professional development experience with endless opportunities for networking, workshops, engaging discussions, and opportunities beyond the one-day conference.

[YEP-DC] Color Vowel Chart Workshop

Do you have students who struggle to remember all the vowel sounds in the English language?  Do they find long vs. short vowels confusing?  Do they often forget that vowel teams often make more than one sound?

E.L. Haynes is proud to offer a two-session workshop that will provide you with a new tool for attacking the pronunciation of vowels, called the Color Vowel Chart.  This tool is being used with students of all grade levels in schools across the country, like in Wilmington, Delaware, Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Pueblo, Colorado.  It is also being used locally with adults in English training programs in Rockville, MD and even by the U.S. State Department! Check out some testimonials from past workshop participants:

"One of my favorite things about the chart is the way that it visually brings attention to the differences among the English vowels--differences that students may not be able to hear. I also like how the color vowel chart has allowed me to incorporate pronunciation into other aspects of my classes. While students are working together on any task, if I hear a major pronunciation problem I can say, "change your vowel from 'blue' to 'mustard' for that word," and the student is usually able to improve her pronunciation." - Jody Gabler, ESL Teacher

"This training was phenomenal. I learned an innovative but easy way to teach students about the many different sounds that vowels can make. The Color Vowel Chart is easy to learn and uses the different modalities of learning so [it] reaches every type of learner." - ESL Teacher, Pueblo City Schools

"Wonderful session. Stellar presenters. Great activities. Best session I've been to. They were on fi-yur!" - Participant, TESOL Toronto 2015

We are looking for at least 20 teachers or specialists who will join us for these interactive workshop sessions.  Please see the attached flyer for more details.

The total cost for both sessions combined is $125 per person.  Each participant will receive a certificate of participation for 6 hours worth of professional development.  Please email Deena Martins at dmartins@elhaynes.org to express interest.  Registration details will follow.

[dcab-l] YeeHaw Bluegrass at Okeechobee,, FL - Januar 18- 23: Preview

The gates for YeeHaw Bluegrass, the successor festival to YeeHaw
Junction, open two weeks from today. The festival runs from the 21st -
23rd with a special performance, free to all, from the Lonely
Heartstring Band on Tuesday evening. This fine old festival is now under
new management, situated in modern, attractive Okeechobee Agri-Civic
Center, and fully supported by the City and by local businesses. Under
the management of Ernie and Deb Evans, the event is re-imagined and
re-invigorated. Should be an enjoyable week of music, activities, and
performances. - Ted
