[dcab-l] Love Song: Love Me Tender II

Songwriters & Music Lovers:

This performance of “Love Me Tender” occurred during a live Armadillo Day celebration

near Reading, Pa.  It is Ed’s vocal with his Martin Herringbone Guitar.  (There exists a

earlier version of this song (Love Me Tender I) by Ed’s trio on this very web page).

Love Me Tender is a 1956 song recorded by Elvis Presley and published by Elvis

Presley Music.  The words and music are credited to Elvis Presley and Ken Darby (under

the pseudonym "Vera Matson",  Ken’s wife).  The RCA Victor recording by Elvis was #1 on

both the Billboard and Cashbox  charts in 1956.

The song was adapted from the tune Aura Lee, a sentimental Civil War ballad, popular

popular with college glee clubs and barbershop quartets.  It was also sung at the U.S.

Military Academy at West Point.

Elvis performed Love Me Tender on The Ed Sullivan Show on September 9, 1956,

shortly before the single's release and about a month before the movie, Love Me Tender,

for which the reworded song was originally written, was released.  On the following day,

RCA received 1 million advance orders, making it a gold record before it was even

released. (!)

This song is dedicated to each and every beautiful young lady from Pottstown High School

Class of ’64, who all knew how to love, tenderly.  To listen, click:
