[dcab-l] Woody & Dad: "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day"

Friends of Christmas 2022:

This is the 14th year my son Woody and I have recorded a Christmas Carol.  Others

we've done in years past, and available on the link below:

2009 "Star of Bethlehem"

2010 "Silent Night"

2011 "Silver Bells"

2012 "Blue Christmas"

2013 "White Christmas"

2014 "Winter Wonderland"

2015 "The Friendly Beasts"

2016 "Away in a Manger"

2017 "The First Noel"

2018 "Jingle Bells" and "Santa Clause is Coming to Town"

2019 "Feliz Navidad" and "Holly Jolly Christmas"

2020 "Silent Night" and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas"

2021 "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear" and Do You Hear What I Hear"

For 2022 we've recorded "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day".   Woody did the

recording, mixing, played harmonics (bells) on his guitar;  Dad sang lead and played the

guitar and bass.  I used an 09 Martin Marquis for guitar, and my Gold Tone acoustic

bass for the bottom end.

" I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day" is a poem by Henry W. Longfellow, written in

1864 and set to music; one of the few to have a melody supplied.  (His brother Samuel

was a writer of hymns, and the two are sometimes confused.)

In a larger score, the bass resembles the ringing of a bell.  The last four bars emanate from an old "Amen".

Please enjoy, and we wish everyone a happy and prosperous Holiday Season!

[dcab-l] Need unrepairable guitar for slide work

Does anyone have an unrepairable acoustic with a good soundboard for slide guitar use?

Prefer an OM or OO style body with cutaway. Brand doesn't matter if the soundboard is decent. Harmless road rash adds value. :)

By unrepairable, I mean that the cost to reset the neck back to playable as a fretted guitar is not worth the cost.

A $100 bill awaits and you can tell the spouse you are thinning the herd.

Thx

Dirk Johnson

Thanks Chris,

No 2 was my place! Always tried to get there early but most often as I
headed towards my "spot" (stage left, directly in front of Mike), "my
table" was always full with 20 more dobro players, all trying to figure
out.."how'd he do that"?  :-)

As an aside.. When I first approached Mike about lessons we were
standing at adjoining urinals during a break.

He said, "Sure I'm in the book. Call me".

No. 2...A magical place.

Hello folks and welcome to a very (VERY) special video event hosted by "Bluegrass Stories w/Katy Daley & Howard Parker)!

Yes, we said a VIDEO event as a recent discovery unearthed a 1984 documentary about the SELDOM SCENE. This documentary was originally produced by Virginia's George Mason University and Capitol Connection.

Introductions by hosts Katy Daley and Howard Parker and Daniel Rainey, the film's director will explain it all.

It'll be the SELDOM SCENE in concert and interviews with all of the band's members.

Special thanks to PJ March for his technical assistance!

[dcab-l] It may be Gift Monday, but were open 24/7/365 for donations...

Hey folks, Giving is Good. If not to DCBU.org, then somewhere else! Just make sure they are a 501(c)3, like us, and put 100% of your donation toward the cause, like us (you know we're a total volunteer organization). We've been busy making things happen this year,  so jump aboard this bluegrass train! We'll be announcing another stop soon!

Here's some of what we've been up to...

Worked with local musicians to facilitate more than FIFTY JAMS that approached 1,500 hours of musical opportunity in and around the DC Area.  We've got 2 recurring events- one in DC one in Maryland- to get folks together and make music.  Sincere thanks go to Barb Diederich and Ed Schaffer for going strong in Hyattsville with the Archie Edward Foundation Jam in Hyattsville. You can find them there on first and third Mondays from 7-10 PM.  Word is that you can usually find a member of the Bluegrass Hall of Fame there too…The DuPont DCBU jam has been rolling for over 10 years now and enjoys a cool downtown vibe at the unique and celebrated Mansion on O Street on the first and third Sundays of each month. We thank a dedicated bunch, including Malcolm Versel, Josh Bell, Bill Thompson, Ken Mayer, Rebecca Krafft and Ben Schifman for keeping things rolling at the O Street Mansion all these years!

We are appreciative to both of our host organizations for their assistance  keeping jamming accessible to all. Jamming cuts to the core of who we are- educational for practice and learning and a social connection with the music we love. Get out of the house and jam!

One more thing- Member up! Your annual membership helps keep the the jams jamming, and the music flowing. Just $25 bucks for individuals!

Some more for your reading pleasure....

We arranged two SUPER community celebration events honoring local luminaries- Bob Perilla, Mary Cliff and Tom Knowles- with great music and jamming. The Bob Perilla's Big Hillbilly Birthday Jamboree was held in Bethesda in June and featured some great music with @Moose Jaw Bluegrass and many guest players and friends.  Bob's got a LOT of friends!

We were in Virginia in October- a reschedule of the spring Pick-nic- and celebrated Mary and Tom with a cook-out burgers and music. Both events were well attended (thanks to all!) and everyone left with a better appreciation of the great musical community that we enjoy- and our honorees who have been integral to making it that way.

Jump on over to our membership page here to join in and support our ongoing efforts to make and support bluegrass. The community is best served by all getting involved. A $25 membership is a good way to start!  DCBU is a Non-Profit 501c(3) organization, so any donation would be good for the tax return!

Theres more to come, but wanted folks to see this on an important night for all non-profits!

Cheers.

[dcab-l] Bluegrass Party today in Falls Church....

DCBU is gathering the community to celebrate music and two of our local stalwarts- Mary Cliff and Tom Knowles.  Join us and make it special. Wer'e cooking, we're jamming and were celebrating. Bring your instrument, voice, a dish of your own to share. Spread the word to your buds.

We'll be jamming in Cherry Hill Park at 2 PM- see the attached map for location.

Swing by the DCBU Facebook page for the event info here

Mary Cliff

Mary's 47 year run with her show 'Traditions' has aired on many stations over the years and has occupied the Saturday night slot on  WERA (96.7) since 2016. Her stellar career has earned her many recognitions, including an induction to the FAI DeeJay Hall of Fame in 2018.

During this time she has been a steadfast supporter of bluegrass and and the local music community, providing updates on performances and spins of locally produced records.

Tom Knowles

Tom Knowles started Appalachian Reign in 1975 and played the local bar scene for almost 10 years, including the famous Red Fox where they had a regular night. Whether at Shakey's Pizza, Smithsonian events and WAMU bluegrass shows, Tom always had a first rate band. Banjo players over the years included Porter Church, Chris Warner, Dick Smith, and Lamar Grier. Other band regulars included Bill Torbert, Buzz Busby,  Dave Auldridge, as well as Joe Meadows on fiddle.

Having moved to Strasburg in 2008, Tom may not have the local visibility that he once had, but his legacy as a band leader and musician in the area is undeniable.

The jams are on the first and third Monday of each month. A small donation is requested but not required (about $4, less if you're hurting, more if you've got it to spare). All attendees must present proof of vaccination. This is not a bar so it's BYOB.

If you know anyone who might like to come, please pass this message along to them. Thanx!

[dcab-l] Gig Alert - N. VA

DCBU was contacted about a band to play at a holiday party that the company will hold in DC or N. Virginia on Dec 8th or 15th. No info about the budget, but the event is small (30-35 people). We are told the company enjoyed Colebrook Road at a previous event (who knows how long ago). If you're interested in making contact, please email info@dcbu.org and we'll forward your reply in full to the contact, cc'ing you.

RE: [dcab-l] RE: Guitar for sale????

Here is my suggestion:

Also, post it on this very website: DCAB-L@googlegroups.com

Also, call my friend Dave Musslewhite, who deals only in big time Martins:

1.717.865.6236

gtrman1833@comcast.net

Also, call Dan Lashbrook, who may or may not be interested…

but you'd need to ship it to him in N. Carolina:

1.828.649.1607

danlashbrook@charter.net

Good luck!

Ed Schaeffer
