[dcab-l] Bill Emerson Remembered: "Breaking It Down"

Songwriters & Music Lovers:

"Breaking It Down" is a memorial song celebrating the life and music of Bluegrass Banjoist Bill

Emerson, a seminal musician in Bluegrass, a founding member of the Country Gentlemen as

well as the Navy Band: Country Current.  Emerson also wrote fresh tunes for the banjo, including

Theme TimeSweet Dixieand Cowboys and Indians, among others, including “Breakin’ It

Down”, which appeared on the vinyl album Award Winning Country Gentlemen in 1972.

I learned this tune from Terry Wittenberg when he played banjo with Rattlesnake Hill.  This cut

is from an early effort practice session.  At tune end, bassist Carolyn Kellock counts out the chords

of the very fancy ending.

Thanks, Bill, for all you’ve done for Bluegrass, for being a gentleman, and for serving our country!
