Music Lovers & Songwriters:
In 1928, Amelia Earhart gained fame by undertaking a transatlantic flight, albeit as a
passenger. Her marriage to media tycoon George Palmer Putnam and a series of
record-breaking flights propelled her to international fame as a long-distance flyer. With
help from a close friend and adviser, Paul Mantz, Earhart and her navigator, the hard-
drinking Fred Noonan, she undertook her longest flight ever: a round-the-world attempt
in 1937. The airplane disappeared, and a massive search effort was unsuccessful, but
Earhart was solidified as an aviation icon.
"Amelia Earhart's Last Flight" was written by “Red River Dave” McEnery shortly after
Earhart's disappearance. It is believed to be the first song ever performed on
commercial television (at the 1939 World's Fair). It was recorded by McEnery in 1941.
The song has maintained popularity since then, including covers by artists including
Kinky Friedman, Ronnie Lane, The Greenbriar Boys, and the Country Gentlemen.
