[YEP-DC] Winter Clothes Donation Drive. Get donations in by Wednesday, January 31

YEP-DC has partnered with our DCPS Adopt-A-School, Ketcham Elementary School, for a winter clothes donation drive! Help us support the DCPS #AttendanceMatters campaign by allowing these students to be properly dressed for school this winter. Throughout January, we will be accepting donations for winter clothes. Feel free to donate monetarily, and YEP-DC will purchase winter clothes for students.

As YEP-DC is a 501c3 organization, your donations will be tax-deductible.

[YEP-DC] YEP-DC Membership Awards Nominations: Due this Friday, February 2nd!

We are seeking nominations for our 2nd Annual YEP-DC Membership Awards. We are looking to recognizing YEP-DC members for outstanding achievement in the Washington, DC area.

We are making a call for nominations! The award requirements are listed below with each category. We ask that you provide the full name of the nominee, their email address, a sentence on why you're nominating them, and a brief bio that includes information on the nominee's contributions to education. The deadline to submit nominations is February 2nd, 2018.

This recognition is open to any young education professionals in the DMV area.

[dcab-l] Early Morning Rain by Gordon Lightfoot

Songwriters & Music Lovers:

"Early Morning Rain" was written by Canadian Gordon Lightfoot. It appeared on

his 1966 debut album Lightfoot! and also as a re-recorded version on his 1975

compilation: Gord's Gold.

Lightfoot composed the song in 1964, but the idea came from his time in Los

Angeles in 1960. Homesick, he would go to the LA Int'l Airport on rainy days to

watch aircraft touch down and take off. That imagery produced "Early Morning

Rain". The lyrics portray a jet-age view of yesteryear’s hobos hopping freights.

This solo version was performed in Oasis Studios in College Park, Md. I supplied all

harmonies and also the bass. There are some vocal artifacts never mixed out, but

still a strong version with some energetic Martin guitar pickin’.

Join us on January 18th for a fundraising Happy Hour to support our DCPS Adopt-A-School Partner, Ketcham Elementary School! 10% of proceeds will go towards purchasing winter coats, hats, and gloves for their students. Help us support the DCPS #AttendanceMatters campaign by allowing these students to be properly dressed for school this winter. You can also make direct donations here, or you can bring new items for donation to the happy hour. In addition, Sudhouse will donate 10% of the profits to YEP-DC's Adopt-a-School, Ketcham Elementary! We'll use the money to buy warm clothing and other necessities for Ketcham students.

Also, kick off the new year by mingling with young education professionals from across the District.. Meet and mingle with young education professionals in the new year. Plus, learn about upcoming 2018 YEP-DC events

Sudhouse is located just half a block from the U Street metro station and they'll offer a signature happy hour drink just for YEP-DC attendees.

[YEP-DC] YEP-DC Adopt-A-School Service Event@ Ketcham ES, Friday, January 19

We will be working with our Adopt-a-School partner, Ketcham Elementary School, to revamp their book room! Volunteers will work on Friday January 19th from 12:30pm-3:30pmhelping to organize books, leveling books for easy access for students and teachers, creating new space for new books for classroom libraries and guided reading. Ketcham ES is located at 1919 15th Street SE.

[dcab-l] Mid-Atlantic Band Contest open for entries

The Mid-Atlantic Band Contest will be held Saturday March,10, 2018 in at the DC Bluegrass Festival in Tysons Corner, VA.

Competing bands will perform two-song sets with the first-place winner receiving a prize of $800, a 20 minute set later in the day, and two free hotel rooms for Saturday night! All competing band members receive free festival admission for for the full Saturday schedule. Entry fee is $50 per band.

First Prize – $800, a Saturday set on the main stage, and two free hotel rooms at the Sheraton Tysons Hotel for Saturday night.
Second Prize – $500
Third Prize – $300

Songwriters & Music Lovers:

Girl at the Crossroad Bar was written by Bill Bryson of the Bluegrass Cardinals,

and appeared on a same-named album in 1976. This song was also recorded by

Bill Grant and Delia Bell, Larry Sparks, and the Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band, all

national bluegrass acts.

This Rattlesnake Hill version was performed at Cactus Flats Restaurant, just north

of Fredrick, Md. Line up:

This Larry Cordel / Jim Rushing song describes, unfortunately, how doing wrong

ends with trouble; especially when it involves your “main squeeze”. Good song, I

love singing it, it’s bluesy, and it’s popular with the crowds.

Cordel and his compatriot Glen Duncan received a Grammy nomination for the

group's debut album, self-titled, in 1992. This song is among 12 others on that CD.

The “Possum”, George Jones, has covered this song with Rick Scaggs in a duet on

the Possum’s CD: My Very Special Guests (Legacy Edition).
