The following responsibilities and qualifications are for General Teacher positions.

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement curricula to meet academic standards

• Thoughtfully plan daily lessons and implement specific strategies to meet the needs of all students, providing extra support, enrichment, or variation of work when necessary

• Be accountable for students' academic growth and increase each individual student's achievement

• Design and implement assessments that measure progress towards academic standards and diagnose areas of student misunderstanding

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree

• Successful completion of Praxis I and II exams (unless holding a standard teaching license)

• Meets Highly Qualified status as defined by the NCLB mandates

• Strong instructional skills and classroom management

• Ability to self-reflect on teaching practices and be responsive to feedback

[YEP-DC] Apply NOW! FirstBook DC Fall 2013 Grant Applications!

The First Book-DC Advisory Board raises local funds to provide eligible programs with high-quality, brand new books to the children they serve. We're currently accepting applications, and invite your classroom organization to apply for a book grant. Previous grantees used their book grants for novel study, shared reading and guided reading groups, among other literacy components.

The First Book DC Advisory Board works to compliment existing work of community-based educational programs by offering new books and educational materials at no cost to the child or program. After receiving the grant, program administrators and teachers select books and create lesson plans and programming. These books are then given to the children to take home and keep.

Qualifying for a book grant from First Book-DC is easy! Just ask yourself the following questions:

Does your organization or classroom serve at least 70% of children in poverty?
After using the books in your curriculum, will the books become the personal property of the children?

If the answers to the above questions are "Yes", then apply! Click here to complete your online application or share it with a qualifying teacher or program. [YEP-DC] Greater Greater Education is looking for contributors (writers, photographers, tipsters)

Greater Greater Education is an affiliate of the Greater Greater Washington site. We have assembled a small team of volunteers to bring news, analysis and opinion about local developments in education (public, charter, private) in D.C. We are looking for some new contributors to help us expand our capabilities, and we can provide an opportunity for your voice and your writing to reach a broader audience. And if you're not interested in writing, we encourage you to read and comment on our articles at http://greatergreatereducation.org to further the discussion.

I know that YEP members run the gamut from experts in federal policy to teachers in DCPS and charter schools, and we would love to have your voices heard, about how various issues impact children in our local schools. Here are some more details about what we're looking for, from a post today. If you would like more information, feel free to email me directly, or write to info@ggdcedu.org:

We started Greater Greater Education about 6 months ago with the goal of providing more coverage of education issues in the DC area and, ultimately, helping to improve the quality of public education. If you have something to say on the subject, we'd like to hear from you.

We're looking both for people who would like to write a one-time guest blog post and also those who are interested in becoming regular contributors. If you fall into either of those categories, please contact us at info@ggdcedu.org with some background information about yourself and an idea of what you'd like to write about.

If you're not interested in writing but you have an idea for something you think would make a good story, we'd like to hear about that too. You can submit a tip here.

We welcome contributions from those with expertise in education policy, but we're also interested in hearing from people who can draw on their personal experience: teachers, parents, students or former students, and neighborhood residents.

Ideally, we look for topics that have both a local angle and some resonance beyond a single individual or even a single school. A background in writing is helpful but not required.

Our bloggers often take positions on issues, but we're primarily looking to inform readers and stimulate reasoned discussion. We look for posts that are based on objective information and that lay out that information clearly, without academic jargon or partisan invective.

[YEP-DC] Global Campaign for Education Youth Advocacy Training

See the note below from the Global Campaign for Education

Are you ready? Are you ready to be an advocate for education for all? Do you know someone that is ready? If your answer to either one of these questions is a resounding yes, then you will be happy to know that our Fall 2013 Youth Advocacy Training application is out.

The training is November 1-5, 2013 in Washington, D.C. In order to be eligible for consideration, the applicant must be 18-25, reside permanently in the U.S., be able to attend the entire training (from dinner in D.C. on November 1, 2013 to departure on November 5, 2013), be interested in education's role in development and be willing to bring the information back to his/her community, complete the entire application and submit one letter of recommendation. We will cover travel (to and from D.C.), lodging and food during the training.
