[YEP-DC] Big things are happening with YEP-DC: Become a Member Today!

YEP-DC continues to expand as the largest YEP chapter nationally. As we grow, we're challenging ourselves to provide unique, high-value programming to young education professionals that connects and empowers in big ways.

Across the District and the surrounding metro area, YEP-DC is known as the organization to meet dynamic players in education, deepen content knowledge through interactive events, and explore new career paths in the sector. Last year alone, we held 25 events, communicated 950 job opportunities, and grew our listserv by over 1,000 people. We understand we've built a rock solid reputation as a fully volunteer-run, "free" organization. We value our community and our place in it.

Recently we've thought deeply about how YEP-DC can foster the next generation of education leaders in the DMV area through new knowledge, career, and professional development programming. We've concluded that formal membership will give our constituents the opportunity to participate in such programming on a scale and quality heretofore not offered.

At a cost of $25 annually, joining YEP-DC as a Member will provide you:

Exclusive access to our listserv, which communicates:
- Bi-weekly job and internship postings in the DC area
- Invitations to area education events
- Information sharing via our blog Recess
Discounted admission to our signature events and programming:
- YEP-DC annual conference (Members will save $20)
- Edu-Jobs (Members will save $5)
- Mentorship program *new programming* (Members will save $25)
- Professional development workshops *new programming* (Members will save $25)

Those who choose not to become a dues-paying Member will be provided access to our basic listserv, which will message YEP-DC events and programming information only. Non-members are welcome to attend events and programs, but will not receive advance notice or discounted admission. The existing model of unpaid access to job postings and non-YEP specific events will be phased out on October 1, 2015.

Bill Blackburn moved to Arizona years ago, was playing banjo in a band called Sagegrass. He might still be in Sagegrass. I last saw him in Arizona in 2011 at the Benson BG festival, used to see him some years at IBMA. He was a high school friend of John Duffey. Together, they played with Lucky Chapman and the Ozark Mountain Boys, out of Frederick MD. I still have the 45 rpm record they made about 1956. The songs are "I've Waited So Long" and "Blue Grass", an instrumental written by John Duffey.

Each year I try to study the available information and cull our
experience attending IBMA's meetings to prepare a personalized guide to
the event. This year, though the details are a little late, they're
coming through in a fashion that makes it clear that this year's World
of Bluegrass and Wide Open Bluegrass will provide a full immersion
experience for anyone willing to make the most of the opportunities
provided. I hope this piece is helpful to you as you plan your week, and

[YEP-DC] Policy and Legal Internship Openings: DC Office of the Deputy Mayor for Education

The DC Office of the Deputy Mayor for Education (DME) is actively seeking graduate level legal and policy interns for the fall semester. Interns should be current students in Law, Policy, Education, Business, or other graduate programs who are seeking part-time or full-time internship opportunities. Internships are unpaid, but can be offered for academic credit. The DME office oversees a wide array of public education issues and is responsible for developing and implementing the Mayor's vision for academic excellence and creating a high quality education continuum from birth to 24 (from early childhood to K-12 to post-secondary and the workforce). The agencies in the DME cluster include DC Public Schools, the Office of the State Superintendent of Education, and the Department of Parks and Recreation. DME also works in collaboration with the independent Department of Public Libraries, University of the District of Columbia, DC Public Charter School Board, and liaises with the State Board of Education.

Interested applicants should email a resume, cover letter, and writing sample to Margie Yeager (margie.yeager@dc.gov), Chief of Staff by Friday Sept. 11.
