[dcab-l] #3 In Memory of Ben Eldridge - Country Pickin'

#3  In Memory of Ben Eldridge  –  Country Pickin’

Songwriters & Music Lovers:

Scene from Afar is a re-issue of my 1987 vinyl album of all original material, featuring

Seldom Scene musicians.  Country Pickin’ is my own song creation, and another opportunity

to remember Ben Eldridge on Banjo.

Phil Rosenthal begins this cut with a lead guitar solo, and his picking can be heard throughout the

song.  Lou Reid sings harmony on the chorus, and all the instruments, including the fantastic

fiddler Carl Nelson, have a chance to “stretch out” during their solos.  The last solo is a duet with

both Phil and Ben: an exquisite duet we may have never heard!

This song’s last line: “The Good Lord, He likes Country Pickin' too!” is a confirmation to Tom T Hall’s

line in “The Year Clayton Delany Died”:  “Could be that the Good Lord likes a little pickin' too

Scene from Afar Musicians:

Phil Rosenthal          Mandolin & Lead Guitar

Chorus: That's what I like about Bluegrass music

That's what I like about a Country song!

Takes me back to my friends an' family

Keeps me honest, makes me strong!

I'm Blue Ridge born I'm country bred

I've heard this music runnin' in my head

Since I sang with my friends

                        In our little white Church

At the edge of the village in the thick of the birch!

Hear that fiddle sawin' hear that banjo kickin' down

Can you feel in your heart these feelings goin' round

As we share in the Spirit

                        Pay the Lord His due

The Good Lord, He likes Country Pickin' too!

                        Only got a dollar an' a bottle to my name;

Show me to the freight yard, I'll go the way I came!

Chorus:           I'm Leavin'... (like a) freight train puffin steam

Rollin' back to Birmingham, never more to roam

Hold your arms out Dixie, your boy's comin' home!

Dear Bluegrass Enthusiast,

As a young girl, I had always dreamed of the joy of sitting together with folks and playing music. I discovered the bluegrass community was all that and more! I fell in love with the voices and the stories, the phenomenal flatpicking, fiddling, & rolling, and the high lonesome sound. I found that folks who share the bluegrass music traditions have a strong sense of belonging to a genuine, caring community, be they in the hills or in the cities. My long-term vision is to expand the awareness of bluegrass music to a broader audience so that more people can be proud of and part of our rich, American heritage.

My immediate vision for the DC Bluegrass Union is to become a more tight-knit union of people who share this common love of bluegrass music. Members have joined DCBU to get together to enjoy the music. I know we can fulfill this goal by

  • Organizing more concerts, jams, open mics, and pick-nics,
  • Bringing sponsors on board to help fund more concerts and multi-band festivals so that we can keep ticket prices down and create opportunities for our local bands to perform for equitable pay,
  • Creating a forum for more members to foster creative thinking about social activities such as the Bluegrass Birthday Bash idea to honor our local legends and to introduce our treasured elder musicians to the younger bluegrass audiences,
  • Creating mentor programs to bring together the DC-area legendary musicians with the up-and-coming amazing young musicians.
  • Growing our website and social media teams, and
  • Increasing our volunteer staff, consultants, program heads, and board positions.

First it takes idea makers, then it always takes doers. People together create action! Please volunteer to share your time and talents as a DCBU team member. And please consider if you know someone or a business who would love to help support DCBU as a financial sponsor as we further the bluegrass music traditions together in the DMV.

A union is a club, society, or association formed by people with a common interest or purpose. I am honored to lead our members and friends towards a more cohesive and active Union. [dcab-l] Re: Reach out and get involved!

Hey folks, The DCBU extends a heartfelt 'Thanks" to Nancy Perry for her work as our Secretary. She was great!

So we have another opening for someone to jump in and grab an oar. We're 'doing' over here and would welcome new faces.

Consider and call if ou have any questions!  202-438-0490. It takes a team!

On Monday, July 1, 2024 at 7:07:46 PM UTC-4 Matt wrote:

Hey Folks- reaching out to our 'local' musician stakeholders in our bluegrass music community.

I'm writing to inform you of DCBU's current leadership opportunities in hopes you would  consider lending your talents to the cause of a stronger, more active bluegrass community.

DCBU is the primary non-profit bluegrass promoter with a wide DC/MD/VA (DMV) perspective. We're looking to increase the presence of bluegrass music from the Shenandoah to the Annapolis/Baltimore area. We've put on eight DC Bluegrass Festivals in the past. Since Covid we have stayed more locally based with great jamming in DC and Maryland, more band performance and jamming opportunities at the Old School House in Lucketts, Virginia, as well as celebratory Bluegrass Birthday Bash jams/performances that honor our local bluegrass heroes, all to attain our common goal of uniting the bluegrass community and promoting the music to others.

We're working to strengthen the connection between our board 's vision and priorities with the local musicians for whom we work to assist. The DC Bluegrass Union has been working to provide events that pay our working local musicians. Our 2024 FebFest at Earp's Ordinary we hired 17 local bands over four weekends of with phenomenal bluegrass performances! Likewise, our monthly Open Mic at Lucketts Schoolhouse in Leesburg, Virginia over the fall, winter, and spring was able to put bands front and center for gigging opportunities at that historic venue. Sure enough, several bands were able to land performances opening for their Saturday shows.  We're glad to add that this program will be returning in the fall.

In order to keep these opportunities rolling, DCBU needs assistance- and input- from our local players on where, when, and how to present future opportunities.  We are not expecting a large time commitment. We hope you can attend a monthly zoom meeting to coordinate priorities and effort, augmented by an occasional retreat (held locally) to discuss longer term initiatives. Of course, there will be the essential follow-up to initiate our planned initiatives. We are counting on many hands making light work. Our success with finding volunteers from around the area will allow us to expand our activities to make for a more connected and thriving community.

Our new president, Carolyn Eyerly, now leads our board as we actively pursue our goals. Please reach out to Carolyn or to me if you are interested in joining our Board of Directors in helping DCBU continue their mission of growth and expansion of bluegrass music in the DCBU DMV region.

The DCBU's enthusiastic Board is always open to new and hear your fresh ideas; and you would have a real opportunity to have your voice heard and to give your ideas life! Please consider becoming part of a dynamic group whose love of the bluegrass music and passion for providing opportunities is secondary to none.  Please join us!

If you know of someone who would be a perfect candidate, please share this email.

We'll be happy to extend an invite to our next board meeting (on zoom) if you'd like an idea of how things are done. You'll get a chance to add you perspective as well.

We're looking to work together for more opportunities to play, and listen. Hope you'll consider joining in.
