[dcab-l] Gravel Road Band this Thursday at Quarry House Tavern

Hey folks, first gig in a while, so swing by and say hello. 

Acoustic Blues and bluegrass that is unlike anything else in town.  Our sound is grassy, but with emphasis on the blues. Bluesgrass.

Heres our formula- 

1 oz each: Doc Watson+Keb Mo+Bill Monroe+Slide Guitar+Bill Withers+Jazzy Gospel+Jimmy Hendrix+Brother Ray+Norman Blake Mix vigorously+Add a dash of Melodic Irish sounds; 2 oz each: hot and spicy Mando chops, funky bass grooves, boxy percussion, sweet fiddle and  garnished with fresh, hand-made original sounds; Shaken and Stirred live on-stage and served fresh for music lovers.

This show marks the debut of Willie Marschner- Fiddlin' Willie- who's got a great style that fits like a glove. Willie and Janine will be sharing the fiddle duties going forward, with Janine having a night off.

The next DC Bluegrass Union "Archie's Barbershop" Jam will be Monday, May 1, from 7:00-10:00 PM, at:

        The Archie Edwards Blues Heritage Foundation ("Archie's Barbershop")
        4502 Hamilton St, Hyattsville, MD, just half a block off of Baltimore Ave. (Rt. 1)

The jams are on the first and third Monday of each month. A small donation is requested but not required (about $4, less if you're hurting, more if you've got it to spare). This is not a bar so it's BYOB.

[dcab-l] Banjo workshop this Saturday!

This Saturday (April 22) from 1:00 to 2:30 PM, I'll be teaching a workshop at the School of Musical Traditions in Takoma Park. It's called "Understanding Melodic Style: A look at the principles that make the melodic technique work." 

Melodic banjo playing is a powerful extension of bluegrass technique that opens up expansive musical vistas. But it can be confusing. This single-session workshop, aimed at students who have a basic grasp of Scruggs-style playing, will demystify melodic banjo by exploring the principles behind it.

[dcab-l] For My Son: Woody's Lullaby

Songwriters & Music Lovers:

 

Here’s a studio cover of a song by Ron Thomason from Dry Branch Fire Squad.

 

I found this song as the last entry in their 1981 vinyl album: Antiques and Inventions; it

was listed as Dak's Song.  I met Ron at Gettysburg Festival during a Guitar Master Class,

and he confirmed that Dak was his son, but oddly enough, he didn't remember the song!   I

asked if I could change the name to Woody's Lullaby for my own son, and he generously

agreed!  He continued: "You can sing and record any of my songs!". 

 

Thereafter, it was a song that I sang to Woody every night at bedtime!
