[dcab-l] Hot Rize Cover in 3-Part Harmony: "Walk the Way the Wind Blows"

Songwriters & Music Lovers:

Walk the Way the Wind Blows, written by Hot Rize lead singer Tim O’Brien, appeared on a

1988 Sugar Hill CD called Traditional Ties, and also on their 2002 CD called So Long of a

Journey.  This song became immediately popular both on the Hot Rise CDs and performances,

but immediately covered by other artists and many bluegrass vocalists.  It has become a

Bluegrass Standard!  But, where did the term “Hot Rize” originate?

Martha White is an American brand of flour and baking products.  It  was the premium brand of

Nashville’s Royal Flour Mills in 1899.  At that time, businessman Richard Lindsey introduced a

fine flour that he named for his daughter, Martha White Lindsey.

The Martha White brand is most associated with its long-term sponsorship of the Grand Ole

Opry, beginning in 1948.  A jingle for the flour, written by Nashville’s Pat Twitty in 1953, was first

performed from the stage of the Grand Ole Opry by bluegrass music artists Flatt and Scruggs. It

is still in use today, having become a bluegrass standard and a signature number of Rhonda

Vincent and the Rage.  In 1972, Tennessee Ernie Ford became the spokesman for the flour,

with the catchphrase, "Goodness gracious, it's pea-pickin' good!"

Packaging for Martha White flour features the likeness of three-year-old Martha White. The

commercials for the products stress that they are "self-rising" due to the presence of leavening

known by trademarks "Hot-Rize" or "Hot-Rize Plus".

Rattlesnake Hill  Musicians:

   Terry Wittenberg  Banjo

   John Relph           Mandolin

   Carolyn Kellock    Bass

   Ed Schaeffer        Guitar & Vocals

Ed

(As always, turn up and headphones preferred)

[dcab-l] DCBU/"Archie's Barbershop" Bluegrass Jam in Hyattsville, MD

The next DC Bluegrass Union "Archie's Barbershop" Jam will be Monday, February 21. That is Presidents' Day.

In the past, when a Jam fell on a Monday holiday, we would sometimes hold the Jam from 1-6p in the afternoon instead of 7-10p in the evening, with a cookout and potluck. This would always happen on Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day. We've never done this on Presidents' Day before. I'd like to get a sense of whether people would like to do this on this coming Monday.

Please let me know whether you would like to:

A) hold the Jam during the afternoon from 1-6p with a potluck (no cookout, sorry); or
B) hold the Jam during the evening from 7-10p as usual.

Please respond only if you're actually planning to come - it's only fair. Thx!

[dcab-l] The VFW Jam is dead. Long live the Barbershop Jam!

The DC Bluegrass Union Takoma Park VFW Jam is dead. Long live the "Archie's Barbershop" Jam!

We're moving to a new space. It's the Archie Edwards Blues Heritage Foundation ("Archie's Barbershop") https://www.acousticblues.com , located at 4502 Hamilton St, Hyattsville, MD, just off of Rt. 1.

Our first Barbershop Jam will be Monday February 7 from 7-10p.

* The space is an empty storefront with one very large room in the front and a small room in the back. The small room contains a refrigerator and a sink, and of course there is a bathroom. There are plenty of chairs in the large room and a table in the middle to put our drinks on. There is parking on the side and rear of the building.

* All attendees must present proof of vaccination and wear masks unless singing or playing a harmonica. The front room is large enough that 6' social distancing would be no problem.

* This is not a bar so it's BYOB.

* The AEBHF is a non-profit and they'd like a donation for our use of the space. They're not demanding any particular amount but $3-4 per person would be reasonable, less if you're hurting, more if you've got it to spare.

* We will keep our familiar schedule of 1st and 3rd Monday evenings from 7-10p, plus 1-6p on Monday holidays with a potluck.

For more information, see the FAQ at http://www.barbdiederich.com/barbershopjam/ .
