Songwriters & Music Lovers:
Here’s a live recording from a Rattlesnake Hill practice in my music studio.
"Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain" is a song written by publisher Fred Rose.
Originally recorded in 1947 by his partner, Roy Acuff, "Blue Eyes Crying in the
Rain" has been covered by Hank Williams, Donn Reynolds, Ferlin Husky, Slim
Whitman, Gene Vincent, Bill Anderson, John D. Loudermilk, Hank Snow, Conway
Twitty, Elvis Presley (last song he sang before his death) and others.
But most notably, the song was recorded by Willie Nelson as part of his 1975 album
Red Headed Stranger, and became a #1 listing on US Hot Country Songs and #21
on US Billboard Hot 100. Both the song and album became iconic in country music
history, and revived Nelson's success as a singer and recording artist, as well as the
writer of "Crazy" (Patsy Cline) and "Hello Walls" (Faron Young).
Even by the standards of sorrowful country songs, "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain"
is one somber tune. The singer kisses his love goodbye, knowing he'll never see her
again. As he sings, he's now an old man who never found true love again and looks
forward to meeting her in heaven.
