[dcab-l] Live Banjo Instrumental: Dear Old Dixie

Songwriters & Music Lovers:

Here’s a live recording from a Rattlesnake Hill performance at Cactus Flats near

Frederick, Md.

"Dear Old Dixie" is a song referenced in “Masters of The 5 String Banjo” by Snuffy

Jenkins, an early 3-finger banjo performer, who said he learned the song from the

singing of brothers Ransom & Chance Barnett from Polk County NC.  A

Barnett nephew sang what he could remember of the song to Jenkins.  Old timers in

the community felt the Barnett brothers learned Dear Old Dixie from Medicine Show

performers that visited Polk County.

Today, no words are employed; “Dear Old Dixie” has become a bluegrass banjo

standard, popularized by banjo artist Earl Scruggs in the seminal bluegrass band

Flatt & Scruggs and the Foggy Mountain Boys, and appeared on a 78rpm record

(Shellac, 10"  Columbia   #21125 in 1953). The flip-side was:  “If I Should Wander

Back Tonight”.

Most every bluegrass banjo picker alive plays this tune, and John Brunschwyler,

as is evident, gives a polished performance!

Rattlesnake Hill Musicians:

           Barb Diederich                     Bassist Extraordinaire

           John Brunschwyler              Banjo

           Garrett Wren                        Mandolin

           Ed Schaeffer                        Guitar

[dcab-l] St. Patrick's Day: Danny Boy

Music Lovers & Songwriters:

For St. Patrick's Day 2021, here's a live performance of "Danny Boy", done at

Coolfont Resort in Berkley Springs, W. Va.   I sent this song out in 2011 and

2016, and thought to repeat this holiday classic this year.

Singing lead is my "All Mixed Up" partner Barry Wendell; his performance is

exceptionable, and the presentation includes harmony.

Musicians:

Barry Wendell         Lead Vocal and Rhythm Guitar

Ed Schaeffer      Lead Guitar and Harmony

         Greg Nelson       Bass

This song is sent out to my own Danny Boy, my friend of 50 years, Dan

Hannahoe…. and his bride Carol.

I hope you enjoy it, and a fine St. Patrick's Day to you all!

[dcab-l] Live Practice: Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain

Songwriters & Music Lovers:

Here’s a live recording from a Rattlesnake Hill practice in my music studio.

"Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain" is a song written by publisher Fred Rose.

Originally recorded in 1947 by his partner, Roy Acuff,  "Blue Eyes Crying in the

Rain"  has been covered by Hank Williams, Donn Reynolds, Ferlin Husky, Slim

Whitman, Gene Vincent, Bill Anderson, John D. Loudermilk, Hank Snow, Conway

Twitty, Elvis Presley (last song he sang before his death) and others.

But most notably, the song was recorded by Willie Nelson as part of his 1975 album

Red Headed Stranger, and  became a #1 listing on US Hot Country Songs and #21

on US Billboard Hot 100.  Both the song and album became iconic in country music

history, and revived Nelson's success as a singer and recording artist, as well as the

writer of  "Crazy" (Patsy Cline) and "Hello Walls" (Faron Young).

Even by the standards of sorrowful country songs, "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain"

is one somber tune.  The singer kisses his love goodbye, knowing he'll never see her

again.  As he sings, he's now an old man who never found true love again and looks

forward to meeting her in heaven.

Rattlesnake Hill Musicians:

           Heather Twigg          Fiddle

           Jack Sanbower         Banjo

           Kevin Conroy            Mandolin

           Ed Schaeffer             Vocal & Guitar

Re: [dcab-l] Solo Performance: Coal Tattoo

Ed... I was in a band "New River Express" back in the late 70's and we recorded "Coal Tattoo" on our one and only LP. The band was Jerry Magri (guitar), Faith Coddington (fiddle), Barney Galt (bass), Wayne Skidmore (banjo) and me (mandolin).
Good song!
