[dcab-l] Ed on Gypsy Jazz Bass: "Bossa Dorado"

Songwriters & Music Lovers:

"Bossa Dorado" is one of the best-known compositions by Dorado Schmitt.  This

instrumental is another “Gypsy Jazz” (Manuche) standard, in the tradition of Django

Rheinhardt.  Both men are “Gypsies”, also known as “Manuche” (or Manouche),

Tsiganes”, or their own name: “Roma”.

Dorado Schmitt, legendary guitarist and brilliant composer, was born in Lorraine,

France in 1957.  He started playing guitar at age seven with his father as his

teacher.  Schmitt’s compositions incorporate improvisation and challenging techniques,

obvious in Bossa Dorado, now a jazz standard.  He eventually became as comfortable

with swing and gypsy waltz as with Bossa Nova and Flamenco.

Musicians:

Armin Hadamer      Taylor Guitar (1st solo)

Matt Kramer           Gypsy Guitar (2nd solo)

[dcab-l] Ed on Gypsy Jazz Bass: "Nuages"

Songwriters & Music Lovers:

Virtually every bluegrass musician, especially guitarists, is familiar with Django

Reinhardt, who along with Stephane Grappelli formed the “Hot Club of France” in

1934.  Django’s guitar capability is virtually unparalleled, and his influence can be heard,

even today, among guitar pickers of all styles.

"Nuages" is one of the best-known compositions by Django Reinhardt (a Gypsy).  He

recorded at least thirteen versions of the tune, a mainstay of “Gypsy Jazz” repertoire.

The title translated to English is "Clouds".  The adaptation with English lyrics is titled

"It's the Bluest Kind of Blues".

Musicians:

Matt Kramer           Gypsy Guitar (2nd solo)

RE: [dcab-l] Re: New Normal Starts Tomorrow- DCBU's Jammin Block Party in Falls Church

I'm still a little nervous about jamming, even outside (all that singing--husband has 7! high risk factors), although I'm aching to. But I might check out the concert. I've been jamming myself to the Stainglass Bluegrass show on bluegrasscountry.org on Sunday mornings, preparing for the day when in-person jams are safe again.

DCBU's take: Lets find the new normal starting tomorrow- DCBU Block Party Jam and Concert taking place at The State Theatre and Clare and Don's Beach shack in Falls Church

Outside and distanced jamming  starting at 4 PM for those who desire, plus FREE live music on 2 stages. DavisBradley duo OUTDOORS at 4 PM followed by Danny Knicely's DCBU All Star Band ON THE OUTDOOR STAGE across the street at The State Theater.

All are invited- its a free show- but are expected to responsibly participate with masks and distancing.

Theres also real food and drinks to keep you rolling. Best of all- a real payday for the great local musicians.

Thats DCBU's New Normal. All you need to do is BRING A MASK and celebrate and support the great music and re-emergence of the  music community that we share.

Finally, please post a comment to confirm the activity on this list. There has not been much activity recently and just wondering how many are visiting. Maybe you can comment on the past free shows that Kip arranged at the State. Darrell Scott, anybody??

DCBU's out front in binging things back, folks, please join in for the ride, wherever it may take us.

Matt Slocum, VP, DCBU.
