[dcab-l] Remembering Mac Wiseman: Old Chain Gang

Music Lovers:

This song was originally called “Free From The Old Chain Gang”, written by seminal

Bluegrass/Country singer Mac Wiseman, recorded originally in 1962, by Capitol Records

on “Bluegrass Favorites”.  It was recorded again in 2003 on the Bear Family Records.

My cover was recorded live, on stage, at the Appalachian Jubilee, a live syndicated

country show from a theater in Chambersburg, Pa.  It contains that “big stage sound”,

and hard to believe it was produced with only 3 musicians:

           John Bruce      Banjo

           Ed Schaeffer   Guitar and Vocals

           Fill In               Bass

We used an unknown bass player that show, but we were able to maintain a deep

groove, despite his unfamiliarity with the tune.  This version has more drive than Mac’s

original, which remains, to this day, a bit obscure among his bastion of songs.

Banjoist John Bruce summons an applause late in his first solo, then again from his third

solo.  I hope you enjoy the big stage sound we produced that evening, by turning up

your listening volume;  just click the attachment.

Enjoy!

Ed
