[dcab-l] Thank You Randy Barrett for 12 great years with DCBU...

Taking the reins from Kip Martin 12 years ago, and bringing great entertainment and community to the DC Metro area.

Cheers, my friend!

DCBU Salutes Randy Barrett

For the past 12 years, Randy Barrett has been the face, voice and sounding board of the the DC Bluegrass Union. As President of our organization, Randy has provided the leadership for the Board that has resulted in many successful events, including The DC Bluegrass Festival, the Hazel Dickens Song Contest and the Mike Auldridge Instrumental Contest. Over these years, DCBU has served members old and new, has attracted far-flung audiences to our festival and concerts,  kept the music playing at our picnics, and coordinated the activities at the DCBU Bluegrass Week at Common Ground on the Hill Bluegrass and Old Time Music instructional camp.

From the start, Randy has worked hard at growing the music community while keeping a focus on DC's rich bluegrass heritage.  As Randy steps down from DCBU's Board of Directors, we salute his vision and dedication to improving the local bluegrass music community.

Randy will remain active in the music community. Expect to find him and his banjo frequenting our events and leading our DCBU Bluegrass Week workshops at Common Ground on the Hill. Look for Randy performing with his band, Big Howdy, with the same energy and creativity that we've come to know- and appreciate- on the DCBluegrass Union Board.

Thank you, Randy!

[dcab-l] Posted on DCAB L

As 2018 closes, we have much to be thankful for, and we will start this thread by citing Barb Diederich for keeping things rolling with the Tacoma Park Jam.

Barb is the best (as a certain Tom would confirm) and we're grateful to have her involvement!

Who-or what- are you thankful for to keep bluegrass rolling in the DC Metro area?

Cheers!

We can post about Randy, after we get some activity...

[dcab-l] great bluegrass fun from your own home

Looking for something fun and relaxing to do coming up that involves learning about Bluegrass, Old Time and another mountain music tradition that might be strangely similar on the other side of the planet?
All from the comfort of your own home, or wherever you may be?
Well today and the days to come might just be your lucky day!
You can travel back and forth from Virginia to Nepal and back listening to folks like Sammy Shelor, Speedy Tolivar, Mike Seeger, Buddy Pendleton (he used to play with Bill Monroe), Danny Knicely, Tara Linhardt, and a whole bunch of cool Nepali musicians from all around Nepal all in one fun-filled documentary called "The Mountain Music Project," and it can be streamed on Amazon now.
Here is the link. Please share it around too.  :)

If folks want to read bios of the folks in the film or see some of the awards it has won, or check out the CD that accompanies the film (but is not all the same music) and has Tim O'Brien, Tony Trischka, Abigail Washburn, Danny Knicely, Tara Linhardt, Mark Schatz, etc and a whole bunch of cool Nepali folks from the villages you can also go to the Mountain Music Project website.

[dcab-l] Woody & Dad sing "Santa Claus is Coming to Town"

Friends of Christmas Present:

This is the 10th year my son Woody and I have recorded a Christmas song.  Others

we've done in years past:

2009 "Star of Bethlehem"

2010 "Silent Night"

2011 "Silver Bells"

2012 "Blue Christmas"

2013 "White Christmas"

2014 "Winter Wonderland"

2015 "The Friendly Beasts"

2016 "Away in a Manger"

2017“The First Noel”

For 2018 we've recorded "Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town".   Woody did the

recording, mixing, and sang harmony.  Dad sang lead and played the guitar and bass.  I

used an 09 Martin Marquis for guitar, and Woody’s fretted bass.

Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town" is a 1970 stop motion Christmas television special

produced by Rankin/Bass Productions.  The film stars Fred Astaire as the narrator S.D.

Kluger, Mickey Rooney as Kris Kringle / Santa Claus, Keenan Wynn as the Winter

Warlock, and Paul Frees in various roles.

The film tells the story of how Santa Claus and several Claus-related Christmas traditions

came to be.  It is based on the hit Christmas song "Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town",

which was introduced on radio by Eddie Cantor in 1934.

Please enjoy, and Woody and I wish everyone a happy and prosperous Holiday Season!

[dcab-l] a few spots left for Tara's Arts, Music, Culture Trip to Nepal

Tara Linhardt will be leading an 8 Day Music, Arts, and Culture trip to NEPAL at the beginning of March (March 1st- March 9th). If you might be interested (or know someone who might be) email Tara at Taraworlds@gmail.com and she can send you more details.

One does not have to be in great shape or scale high mountains (unless they want to). It will be a small group with some flexibility and a focus on seeing some of the main sites and also meeting and mingling (and possibly jammin if you want) with really cool local artists, musicians, some options for meditation, yoga, and having a really magical and great time!

If folks are interested in staying after the tour is done to do a trek or study something more in depth or volunteer, Tara can also possibly help set you up with such things. She used to live and study with Nepali woodcarvers as well as having traveled, lived with, and performed with musicians around Nepal. She also lived and studied there for a year of college, so speaks the language and has lived and studied in some monasteries and ashrams in Nepal too.

She will be working in partnership with the Trek of Your Life company which has coordinated many tours to Nepal over the years.

If anyone is interested in hearing more details, seeing the itinerary, or has questions email her and she can send you the itinerary and registration forms that you can look over with no commitment required if you just want to look the materials over. Her email is Taraworlds@gmail.com.

Life can be a fun and magical adventure if you make it one!

[dcab-l] Mountain music documentary now available to view on Amazon

Some years ago Danny Knicely and Tara Linhardt traveled to Nepal to record and perform with  the wandering minstrels of the Himalayas. They showed an amazing commonality in the sound and 'feel' of the traditional music of the Himalayas and traditional mountain music of the Appalachians in the U.S. The result was a wonderful documentary that can be viewed on Amazon.

The Mountain Music Project is available here:

[dcab-l] Mile Auldridge Instrumental Contest Winners

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WINNERS OF 2018 MIKE AULDRIDGE INSTRUMENTAL CONTEST ANNOUNCED

December 10, 2018 – The winners of the 2018 Mike Auldridge Instrumental Composition Contest are:

1st The Golden Angle by David Benedict of Cambridge, MA
2nd Duckpin by Brad Kolodner of Baltimore, MD
3rd Boardwalk by Tristan Scroggins of Nashville, TN
Honorable mention: Sandridge by Corrina Stephens of White's Creek, TN

Their original compositions can be heard here. We congratulate the winners and thank our judges, Gabe Hirshfeld, Ira Gitlin and Mary Burdette, for their time and talents.

The contest honors the life and musicianship of one of America's greatest bluegrass players. Mike's smooth and effortlessly tasteful Dobro guitar work borrowed from Josh Graves, but added swing, blues and horn influences to arrive at a uniquely new sound. By the time Mike co-founded the Seldom Scene in 1971, his musical touch was unmistakable – and over the next 40 years Auldridge became a pillar of Washington bluegrass history.

Proceeds from the competition help fund the DC Bluegrass Union, a nonprofit, member organization dedicated to promoting bluegrass music in the greater Washington, DC area through performance and education.

For more information, please contact Randy Barrett at 703-405-6230.

[dcab-l] Flatt & Scruggs: Ground Speed

Music Lovers & Songwriters:

This banjo instrumental by Flatt & Scruggs & the Foggy Mountain Boys was

released on their vinyl album Foggy Mountain Banjo in 1961.

Ground Speed was written by Earl Scruggs, and is a staple among bluegrass banjo

pickers.  Later in Scruggs’ career, as a pilot, he often flew to various performances.  As

any pilot, he understood the term “Ground Speed” to mean an aircraft's speed relative

to the ground.  And so, the title.

Musicians are listed below. This Cactus Flats performance highlights Keith Arneson on

the speeding banjo, and Tom Grey on bass.  Keith played banjo for the Navy Band

Country Current for 24 years, taking over for Bill Emerson.   And Tom, on bass, is a

bluegrass Hall of Famer twice (!), once with the Country Gentlemen and then also

with the Seldom Scene.

This thing comes at you like a torpedo, so hold tight!

Musicians:

   Keith Arneson          Banjo

   Tom Grey                Bass

   Lou Janesko            Fiddle

   Ed Schaeffer            Guitar
