Music Lovers & Song Writers:
This fiddle tune, “St. Anne’s Reel”, has a lineage that is twisted and tangled. The tune has roots
that are mainly French-Canadian, but the melody is found from Irish and Celtic origins as well…
So, no definitive answer.
In addition to being a bluegrass jam favorite, “St. Anne’s Reel” has been played by most every
bluegrass picker there is (or was), on most every instrument. Famous recordings:
Dan Crary – Jammed If I Do – 1994
Jerry Douglas – Changing Channels –1987
Cody Kilby – Just Me – 1997
Kenny Smith – Studebaker – 1997
This live cut is from a mid-80s video show taped and broadcast from a Takoma Park station, on a
show called “Takoma Tempo”, hosted by Adele (Abrams) Bunoski. The rhythm guitar is by my
“All Mixed Up” partner: Barry Wendell. My Martin guitar, on that day, was a D-76 I purchased
years ago from Dave Musselwhite in Pennsylvania.
For those who may have interest, the format of this (and most) fiddle tunes is: AABB; this cycle, of
pure melody, is stated first in an A and B part, then improvisation cycles are introduced (two on
this version). The original AA melody is then stated at the very end. Standard “theme and
variations” format.
As always, headphones preferred:
