[dcab-l] House Party - Mike Compton and Joe Newberry - Sunday, July 16, 3pm, Bowie, MD

Mike Compton
and
Joe Newberry

Sunday, July 16th, 2017

3:00pm

Suggested donation $20

Hosted by Archie and Pris Warnock

Bowie, MD

We are excited to present the return of master musicians Mike Compton and Joe Newberry for our next Music At The Abbey bluegrass and old-time music party at 3:00 PM on Sunday, July 17th. You won't want to miss this opportunity to join us here in Bowie, MD for an afternoon of terrific music and company.

Mike Compton and Joe Newberry, masters of old-time mandolin and banjo/guitar, dig deep into early country music and blues. Their duet-singing, two-man string band ranges between traditional songs, instrumentals, 'mother' ballads and original tunes. It's not about the number of notes with Compton and Newberry, but telling the truth and respecting the song.

Mike Compton is a Grammy award winner, IBMA Mandolin Player of the Year nominee, a steady sideman for John Hartford from 1994 until Hartford's death in 2001, and mandolinist for the Nashville Bluegrass Band. Mike is inarguably the world expert on Bill Monroe-style bluegrass mandolin, and is also steeped in old-time fiddle tunes, early string band music and Delta blues. He's entertained from Carnegie Hall and the White House to our house, and we couldn't be happier that he's back visiting us again in Maryland.

Known far and wide for his powerful banjo playing, Joe Newberry is a prizewinning guitarist, songwriter, and singer to boot. In addition to his work with Mike, Joe plays with old-time music legends Bill Hicks, Jim Watson, and Mike Craver, performs with guitarist Jon Shain, and is a frequent guest on Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion. He won the songwriting prize for "Gospel Recorded Performance" at the 2012 IBMA Awards for his song Singing As We Rise, and was co-writer, with Eric Gibson, of the 2013 IBMA Song of the Year for They Called It Music.

[dcab-l] Father's Day Song: Will the Circle Be Unbroken?

      Music Lovers & Songwriters:

Here’s a live cut from a Rattlesnake Hill gig at Cactus Flats, a wonderful family

restaurant just north of Fredrick, Md.

"Will the Circle Be Unbroken?" is a popular Christian hymn written in 1907 by

Ada R. Habershon with music by Charles H Gabriel.  The song is often recorded

unattributed and, because of its age, has lapsed into the public domain.

A reworked version of the song, intended as a funeral hymn, was written by A. P. Carter

and released in 1935 by the Carter Family.  The Carter version, titled “Can the Circle be

Unbroken”, uses the same music and the same verse structure but with different verse

lyrics and a modified chorus.  That version has often been recorded as "Will the Circle

be Unbroken", including the 1972 performance by Mother Maybelle Carter and ensemble

on the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band album of the same title.  In 1998 “Circle” was inducted into

      the Grammy Hall of Fame.

My cover appeared in a CD called “Live at Cactus Flats”; the playdate happened to fall

on Father’s Day.  As I had “Circle”  already on my playlist, and suddenly realizing on the

bandstand that I could substitute “Father” for the usually referenced “Mother”, I did so,

on the fly.  Despite the mourning and burial normally reserved for “Mother” in this song,

you can hear the how responsively the audience reacts to “Father” in a song we all

      know and love.

         Garrett Wren                   Mandolin

[dcab-l] Martin Guitar & Sax on "Something Simple"

      Music Lovers & Song Writers:

This cut was recorded at Micah Solomon’s Oasis Studios in College Park, Md.  for a

      CD entitled  Acoustic Inventions:

This CD blended Bluegrass with a bit of Redneck Jazz.  Both Bruce Swaim and John

Previti played for years in Danny Gatton’s Redneck Jazz band, and they bring some

of that feeling to this song:

      Bruce Swaim   Sax

      John Previti     Stand-Up Acoustic Bass

Ed Schaeffer   Martin Guitar (’87 Herringbone), Vocals, & Harmony

This song was written by songwriter Kathy McMearty from Philadelphia, a great

songwriter and singer.  As always, headphones preferred:

      Ed

PS:  To see the astonishing Danny Gatton (with Previti) doing Redneck Jazz, check out this Austin

City Limits video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6rVHKlF8y0E    BTW, this does include

Danny’s Beer Bottle slide, and playing through a towel, even with left hand upside down.
