[dcab-l] Woody & Dad sing "The First Noel"
Friends of Christmas Present:
This is the eighth year my son Woody and I have recorded a Christmas Carol. Others
we've done in years past:
2009 "Star of Bethlehem"
2010 "Silent Night"
2011 "Silver Bells"
2012 "Blue Christmas"
2013 "White Christmas"
2014 "Winter Wonderland"
2015 "The Friendly Beasts"
2016 "Away in a Manger"
For 2017 we've recorded "The First Noel". Woody did the recording, mixing, sang
baritone and played slide guitar; Dad sang lead and played the guitar and bass. I
used an 09 Martin Marquis for guitar, and my fretless Rob Allen bass.
"The First Noel" is a traditional classical English Christmas carol. "Noel" is an Early
Modern English synonym of "Christmas". The carol is of Cornish origin. Its current form
was first published in Carols Ancient and Modern (1823) and Gilbert and Sandys
Carols (1833).
The melody is unusual among English folk melodies in that it consists of one musical
phrase repeated twice, followed by a refrain which is a variation on that very phrase. All
three phrases end on the third of the scale. It is thought to be a version of an earlier
melody sung in a church gallery setting.
Please enjoy, and we wish everyone a happy and prosperous Holiday Season!

[dcab-l] Martin Guitar Christmas: Blue Christmas
Friends of Christmas Present:
Here's a Christmas song, from a live performance by the ”All Mixed Up” band:
Barry Wendell Rhythm Guitar and Vocals (bella voce)
Ed Schaeffer Martin Guitar and Harmony
Greg Nelson Bass
The song was first recorded by Doye O'Dell in 1948, and was popularized the
following year in three separate recordings: one by country artist Ernest Tubb,
one by musical conductor and arranger Hugo Winterhalter and his Orchestra
and Chorus, and one by bandleader Russ Morgan and his Orchestra.
Other recordings: Billy Eckstine, The Beach Boys, the Browns, Damian McGinty
(from Glee).
However, Elvis Presley cemented the status of "Blue Christmas" as a rock-and-
roll holiday classic by recording it for his 1957 LP Elvis' Christmas Album.
And, in 2008, a duet of the song by Elvis Presley and Martina McBride was
featured on the album Christmas Duets and reached #36 on the US Country
Chart.
In this version, after Barry actually begins playing, you can hear me apply my
capo to the Martin… To listen, click below:

Enjoy, and Happy Holidays!

[dcab-l] Martin Guitar Christmas: Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer
Friends of Christmas 2017:
Here's a Christmas song, from a live performance by the ”All Mixed Up” band:
Barry Wendell Rhythm Guitar and Vocals (bella voce)
Ed Schaeffer Martin Guitar and Harmony
Greg Nelson Bass
Rudolph, a fictional reindeer, is usually depicted as a young calf who barely has
antlers, with a glowing red nose. He’s the lead reindeer pulling Santa's sleigh on
Christmas Eve. The glow of his nose is so great that it lights the way for Santa
through inclement winter weather.
Rudolph was created in a 1939 booklet written by Robert L. May and published
by Montgomery Ward department store. May's brother-in-law, Johnny Marks,
adapted the story of Rudolph into a song. Gene Autry's recording of the song
hit No. 1 on the Billboard pop singles chart the week of Christmas 1949. Autry's
recording sold 2.5 million copies the first year, eventually selling a total of 25
million, and it remained the second best-selling record of all time until the 1980s.

[dcab-l] Neighbors Jam CANCELLED - CLOSING tomorrow!
CLOSING permanently tomorrow due to lease issues, with no plans to
open at another location. Hussein has been good to many of us for many
years, not only with the jam but bands, etc. Very sorry to see him go
out.
Soooo....NO JAM this Sunday, as we regroup and find a willing venue
who will take us aging hippies and our peculiarities. If anyone has
viable suggestions, please send them along.
We would prefer the Toll Road Corridor, if we could, and we'll
probably continue in the summer at the Sterling Golf Club. People do
like the view from the picking porch there and we now have a
manageable agreement with the club and bartender.
Many of you know Gus Row, at Epicure - http://www.epicurecafe.org/, so
maybe that is a possibility?

Dirk Johnson
