[dcab-l] #8 Remembering Ben Eldridge on Fred Moore's "Rim of a Wheel"

#8 Remembering Ben Eldridge on Fred Moore’s  “Rim of a Wheel

Songwriters & Music Lovers:

Here’s another selection from “Scene from Afar”:

This CD, a reissue of a 1987 vinyl album of original material, mostly features

Seldom Scene musicians.  This song, On the Rim of a Wheel was penned by my

friend Fred Moore from Philadelphia.  It's a gospel song with Holiness imagery.

The song has a "question and answer" format, with answer lines stating a different

verse;  For example, Verse II is used to "answer" Verse I.  Consequently, you'll hear

lines sung in the "Question parts" subsequently stated in the "Answer parts".

The only accompaniment to my voice is my Martin Guitar and Phil Rosenthal's

mandolin.  Quite stark, but powerful imagery.

On the Rim of a Wheel

                                                Fred Moore

                        I.          Oh the wind and the rain

                                    Will howl 'round the door

(II)        And the night black as pitch

                                    Will last evermore

                                    I'll not turn away

                                    Nor seek worldly peace

                                    For God is my light

                                    I need no release

II.         On the rim of a wheel

                                    Turning in time

                        (III)       Pressed to the sand

                                    By heaven sublime

                                    That wheel is the Home,

                                    The Being, the Hand

                                    Fear not for the Lord

Is the Wheel and the Sand

III.        And the rivers will rage

And the flood tides will roll

                        (IV)      And the foundations shake

And the Death Bell will toll

                                    Neither mountain nor plain

                                    Will offer respite

                                    For the terrible chain

                                    Will cover like night.

IV.        (But) There is a wave

                                    On which we can ride

                        (I)         That washes the shore

                                    And returns with the tide

                                    (I'll) Ride out the storm

                                    On the heavenly Sea

                                    Fear not for the Lord

                                    Is waiting on thee.

End:    For God is my light

                                    I need no release
