[dcab-l] Southern Maryland Bluegrass-Missy Raines
California, MD – March 27, 2025,
— The Southern Maryland Bluegrass Concert series will close the season presenting its 8th show featuring, Missy Raines & Allegheny on Sunday April 27, 2025. Hosted by Jay Armsworthy, the 2024-2025 series have brought some of Bluegrass music's national known female singers and pickers to the Calvert Elks Lodge. Missy Raines will take the stage starting at 2 pm at the Lodge, located at 1015 Dares Beach Road in Prince Frederick, MD.
GRAMMY nominated and 10-time International Bluegrass Music Association Bass Player of the Year, Missy Raines, has received this honor more than any other bass player in the history of the organization. In January of 2020, Missy debuted on the Grand Ole Opry with her band, Allegheny.
Missy Raines & Allegheny is Ben Garnett on guitar, Eli Gilbert on banjo, Ellie Hakanson on fiddle, Tristan Scroggins on mandolin, and of course Missy on bass fiddle. The band is named for the Allegheny highlands of West Virginia where she grew up. This band is a significant nod to her deep traditional Bluegrass roots. The music is traditional and hard driving at its core but energized with Missy's well-known innovation for originality.
Missy grew up in West Virginia, just a few miles from the historic C&O Canal, the headwaters of the Potomac River, and the Maryland and Pennsylvania state lines. Geographically, it was a pretty straight shot down 'out of the hills' to the Washington DC, Baltimore, and northern Virginia areas. Her family would travel there as much as possible to hear all the incredible bluegrass that was made there during the 60's and the 70's. Washington, D.C. was a hotbed of bluegrass (both traditional and progressive) at the time with bands like Bob Paisley & Ted Lundy, Del McCoury and the Dixie Pals, the Country Gentlemen, and the Seldom Scene. All of that music affected her deeply then. Today she is having the time of her life letting those influences shine through with this band, Allegheny.
Though Missy emerged onto the national scene through the ancient tones of bluegrass music, her unrelenting urge led her to many collaborations in the areas of Americana, country and folk music. As a Bluegrass/Americana icon, her latest album, Highlander on the Compass Record label, is sort of a homecoming for her. It takes her back to where her roots started, traditional Bluegrass music.
When she started to make a full-time career in music, she headed for the bright lights of Nashville, ultimately garnering some of the biggest accolades in the music industry, including 14 International Bluegrass Music Association honors, with 10 being awarded for "Bass Player of the Year.
Peeling back the layers of Highlander, Missy returns to her Bluegrass roots. Coming into the recording process, Missy found herself, perhaps subconsciously, digging deep into the people, places and things residing at the foundation of her life and career. She watched that first generation of Bluegrass people creating traditional music, then breaking away from it to do their own thing. And all of it is still surviving and flourishing today. As quoted by Missy Raines, "there's nothing more Bluegrass than the act of absolute innovation — and that's what we're doing, because that's what (Bill) Monroe did from the start."
Missy Raines & Allegheny will begin at 2:00 pm with doors opening at Noon. Tickets are $23.00 per person and under 12 free with a paid adult. Hamburgers, Hot Dogs with all the trimmings will be available for sale from Noon until 2:00 pm by the Calvert Elks. Tickets are available at the door. Although not required, if you prefer to pay in advance, you may do so by going to www.somdbluegrass.com or call 301-737-3004.
The 2025-2026 Southern Maryland Bluegrass Concert Series will start back up on Sunday October 5, 2025, with the award winning, Seldom Scene. Bluegrass Country Radio (www.bluegrasscountry.org) is a proud media sponsor of Southern Maryland Bluegrass at the Elks.

[dcab-l] Duffey Stories
Akira!
I trust this email finds you happy and healthy.
I watched "Duffey Stories" twice, once on my cell,
and then on my larger terminal screen, where the
larger pictures and text created an enhanced listen.
I really liked that the speakers' names were inserted
(in parens)…
My favorite story was the interaction with Ralph Stanley;
and Duffy's high singing on "The Lonesome River".
I didn't know that song was previously done by Carter, and
I have a live audio version of him doing it. This is from
Billy Q. Smith about that cut and the high part (recorded in
1961):
I suspect the trio on the chorus features Carter Stanley, Ralph Stanley
and Al Elliott, with Elliott singing Pee Wee Lambert's original part.
Here's that URL; always chilling:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjBZsdbMKms
All told, really an exceptional recounting of the Gents, Scene,
and other notables from that seminal period. Well edited
and well done. Lots of humor and laughing!
(BTW: Did the Luger remain under the seat???)
Thanks so much for assembling these stories, and I'm sure
I'll discuss them with Grey, Rosenthal, and Travers.
God Bless!
Ed

[dcab-l] Donna Ulisse Concert

Country music fans may remember Donna Ulisse as an Atlantic Records recording artist, but now she's going 'all Bluegrass on ya'! With a musical past as colorful as a Van Gogh painting, singer/songwriter, Donna Ulisse found her way from Nashville's Music Row to a lily filled mountainside where the sound of the music she loves to write, and sing was born.
Donna Ulisse and the Poor Mountain Boys show will begin at 2:00 pm with doors opening at Noon. Tickets are $23.00 per person and under 12 free with a paid adult. Hamburgers, Hot Dogs with all the trimmings will be available for sale from Noon until 2:00 pm by the Calvert Elks. Tickets are available at the door. [dcab-l] Southern Maryland Bluegrass-Junior Sisk Band
Double header of Bluegrass Sunday March 2
Award-winning, traditional first-rate Bluegrass at its best! The Junior Sisk Band is among the most reliable hard core Bluegrass talents in the business and bringing it to the Southern Maryland Bluegrass series at the Elks along with a special guest.
Concert number 5 in the series of Southern Maryland Bluegrass hosted by Jay Armsworthy continues to bring today's national known singers and pickers in Bluegrass music from all genders of life. The Junior Sisk Band along with Red Camel Collective will take the stage on Sunday March 2nd starting at 2 pm at the Calvert Elks Lodge, located at 1015 Dares Beach Road in Prince Frederick, MD.
Junior Sisk is widely recognized as one of today's top Bluegrass vocalists and a constant reminder that traditional Bluegrass is still alive and well. From the Blue Ridge mountains of Virginia, his Bluegrass roots run deep. Having a father as a songwriter and a mother who sang, Junior first learned to play guitar around age 14.
His early influences included The Stanley Brothers, Larry Sparks, and Dave Evans, but he often credits the Johnson Mountain Boys with inspiring him to pursue Bluegrass professionally. Sisk first made his mark in Bluegrass as a songwriter in the early 90's, penning classic Lonesome River Band songs like "Game (I Can't Win)" and "Tears Are Blinding Me." In 1998, he joined 2 bands, Wyatt Rice & Santa Cruz and Blueridge and helped define the sound of driving, modern traditional Bluegrass. Sisk founded his own band and called them Ramblers Choice, making a successful career with Rebel Records. In 2012 an album titled, "Heart of a Song" won him the spotlight for the IBMA Album of the Year award. The album also included a single titled, "A Far Cry from Lester and Earl," which won him the 2012 Song of the Year Award from the IBMA. Sisk was furthered honored when he was named 2013 IBMA Male Vocalist of the Year. Since this time, Junior Sisk has received several IBMA and SPBGMA awards.
Most recently, Junior has supported his band in another sideline project called the Red Camel Collective. It's a new Bluegrass group that performs dates outside the Junior Sisk Band. They chose the name "Red Camel Collective," to pay homage to Junior Sisk. He recommended the name of the band by one of his hit songs called "The Man In Red Camels," a song about a man reminiscing of bygone days and fondly remembering an old man plowing his field while wearing a pair of Red Camel brand overalls. This new band's style is quite eclectic, ranging from traditional bluegrass and classic country to fresh modern sounds all their own. Through out Junior's show, he grants them the opportunity to shine on their new sound.
The show will begin at 2:00 pm with doors opening at Noon.
The remainder of the series brings singer/songwriter Donna Ulisse and her band The Poor Mountain Boys making her 1st time appearance on March 23rd. Closing the Southern Maryland Concert Series will be 10-time award winning Bass Player of the Year in Bluegrass music, Missy Raines and her band Alleghany. The star-studded event included Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, Conan O'Brien, Dan Aykroyd, Jack Black, Kevin Nealon, Steve Carell, and many more. [dcab-l] #8 Remembering Ben Eldridge on Fred Moore's "Rim of a Wheel"
#8 Remembering Ben Eldridge on Fred Moore’s “Rim of a Wheel”
Songwriters & Music Lovers:
Here’s another selection from “Scene from Afar”:
This CD, a reissue of a 1987 vinyl album of original material, mostly features
Seldom Scene musicians. This song, On the Rim of a Wheel was penned by my
friend Fred Moore from Philadelphia. It's a gospel song with Holiness imagery.
The song has a "question and answer" format, with answer lines stating a different
verse; For example, Verse II is used to "answer" Verse I. Consequently, you'll hear
lines sung in the "Question parts" subsequently stated in the "Answer parts".
The only accompaniment to my voice is my Martin Guitar and Phil Rosenthal's
mandolin. Quite stark, but powerful imagery.

Ed
(As always, turn up and headphones preferred)
On the Rim of a Wheel
Fred Moore
I. Oh the wind and the rain
Will howl 'round the door
(II) And the night black as pitch
Will last evermore
I'll not turn away
Nor seek worldly peace
For God is my light
I need no release
II. On the rim of a wheel
Turning in time
(III) Pressed to the sand
By heaven sublime
That wheel is the Home,
The Being, the Hand
Fear not for the Lord
Is the Wheel and the Sand
III. And the rivers will rage
And the flood tides will roll
(IV) And the foundations shake
And the Death Bell will toll
Neither mountain nor plain
Will offer respite
For the terrible chain
Will cover like night.
IV. (But) There is a wave
On which we can ride
(I) That washes the shore
And returns with the tide
(I'll) Ride out the storm
On the heavenly Sea
Fear not for the Lord
Is waiting on thee.
End: For God is my light
I need no release
