Phil Rosenthal          Mandolin & Lead Guitar

Ed Schaeffer            Vocal & Rhythm Guitar

(As always, turn up and headphones preferred)

                                    Murder on the Mountain

Murder on the mountain…      Hear the coyote screamin'

Chilly winter winds are blowin' cold

Found them both together…   Both were lyin' to me

Now they lie together in their blood

But the rope is gettin' tighter, my neck it starts to hurt

Trap door is a'droppin',  I'm fallin' toward the dirt

My heart is breakin' in my chest, my breath is gettin' short

Jesus take me to your arms, my God it's gettin' dark!

Murder on the mountain…      Fire all around them

Burnin' like the cheatin' in their hearts

Didn't hear me comin'…         Shot 'em with my rifle

Now the pain of love won't let 'em part

[dcab-l] American Standard Bass for Sale

I’ve had this Am Standard for 25 years; structurally sound! Probably needs

new bridge and strings of your choice.

I have the action low for my jazz playing, but Bluegrass bass

players who come for BG jams play this Am. Standard here

in my music room. Shows normal wear, for 80 (or so) years of

playing.

Comes with black bag, black stand, bridge tuner (Snark) and

2 containers of rosin. Currently fitted with D’Addario Orchestral

Series Mediums (H611 3/4M). I don’t change strings much because

I prefer a more dolce sound (rather than metallic).

Looking at $2500, rather firm. Please let me know if you’re interested.

[dcab-l] Southern Maryland Bluegrass

The summer is just about over.  The outdoor camping season is packing up.  Now Bluegrass music takes the indoor stages of the warm and cozy venues such as the Calvert Elks Lodge 2620 in Prince Frederick, MD.  Jay Armsworthy is bringing in some of the most national known singers and pickers in Bluegrass music from all genders of life today.  Starting Sunday October 6, David Parmley and his band take the stage starting at 2 pm.

Best known for his talent standing next to his Dad, Don Parmley, in a band that brought the new generation to their feet back in the 70's when they made their move from California to the Washington, DC area.  That band was the Bluegrass Cardinals.  David Parmley has since led his own solo career with bands such as Continental Divide and the Cardinal Tradition.  After a short break from the road, David has made a comeback with a new sound and new look asking the question, So Wha'd I Miss?". Which happens to be the title of his latest recording on the 615 Hideaway Records.  Keeping to his traditional roots David Parmley is really excited to start this new chapter in his career in music with an all-new traditional Bluegrass band.

The star-studded line up continues on November 17th with the Larry Stephenson Band and December 15th with the traditional Bluegrass sounds of Joe Mullins and the Radio Ramblers.  After the holidays, 2025 opens  up with the "Queen of Bluegrass Music" herself, Rhonda Vincent and the Rage from Nashville's Grand Ole Opry.  A rare and special occasion show sure not to miss.  The remainder of the series brings the return of fan favorites, Lonesome River Band on February 9th., a double header in March with the hard-core mournful sound of the Junior Sisk Band March 2nd and singer/songwriter Donna Ulisse making her 1st time appearance on March 23rd.  Closing the Southern Maryland Concert Series will be 10-time award winning Bass Player of the Year in Bluegrass music, Missy Raines and her band Alleghany

With another star-studded, award winning series of Bluegrass music, all shows start at 2:00 pm and the doors opening at Noon.  Food will be available for sale at each show from Noon until 2:00 pm.  To find out more information and how to get tickets for each show, go to www.somdbluegrass.com or call 301-737-3004.  The Calvert Elks Lodge #2620 is located at 1015 Dares Beach Road in Prince Frederick, Maryland.

[dcab-l] #4 Remembering Ben Eldridge with Phil Rosenthal's "Presidential Breakdown"

#4 Remembering Ben Eldridge with Phil Rosenthal’s  “Presidential Breakdown

Songwriters & Music Lovers:

Here’s another selection from “Scene from Afar”:

This CD, a reissue of a 1987 vinyl album of original material, mostly features Seldom Scene

musicians.  This instrumental, Presidential Breakdown, is a Phil Rosenthal contribution.  All

cuts are entitled with Washington DC references, and so:  “Presidential Breakdown.

Phil begins this instrumental on Mandolin followed by the tune’s chorus (B Part) with Ben’s Banjo.

The cycle repeats with Freddy’s dobro, then Carl’s fiddle on the B Part.  Please note Carl’s “outro”

on this solo, a dazzling ending musical touch.  It's a bit too flashy to describe, but it sounds like pull

offs followed by harmonics.  It's a treasured lick executed by a master fiddler!

After Ben’s next A Part, Carl follows, sounding like Fiddle-on-Fire!   Somebody pleasingly wrote in

a review at the time that the band was "allowed to stretch out".  See if you agree!

Scene from Afar Musicians:

Phil Rosenthal          Mandolin

Ed Schaeffer            Rhythm Guitar

Carl Nelson              Fiddle

Sounds like fun.

Just to know in advance, will it be an open jam as far as repertoire? Or is it a "should be some kind of bluegrass" jam?

I've never seen a good definition of "bluegrass" since Seldom Scene and Old and in the Way blew that all up, but I don't wanna be the one to bust up a bluegrass jam with a Stones tune, either.

Hey All,
Look for the DCBU banner on the barn!
Also, look for the look-alike banner on our Jam tent in vendor row where I'll be hosting some amazing jam leaders and pickers!

This is always a great time, so we figured we'd gather the crowd for a great stage show and great picking. If your going, look us up!

We'll have a communal jam tent, and also setting up a cool Barnyard recording studio for video's and recording for free. Bring your buds by and get a super recording of you and your buds to mark the occasion!

With contests rolling along (Mike Auldridge Insturmental Contest is open, and Hazel Dickens Song Contest looming) this will be a great time to get a recording of your song or tune.
