[dcab-l] FW: New comment on "Ed Schaeffer & Rattlesnake Hill Musical Slideshow"

Cats:

I received this message from Dallas Blair, a picker whose many exploits

are mentioned in his message below, directed to my Rattlesnake Hill

YouTube page (I think!).

Anyway, enjoy Dallas' recounting of his contacts and bands here in the

DMV.

Seeing my old friends Jack Sanbower, John Brunschwyler, Barb Diederich and Doug Moats makes me nostalgic. I was the person who co-founded No Leeway with Jack Sanbower, when he and I decided to part ways with the Bluegrass Image and forge a different path musically. Doug Moats was our original bass player and was usually a calming influence on us when we had disagreements or other tensions among band members. Ultimately, I moved on to other things and ended up in the Glens Falls NY area for a few years before returning to Maryland in 2000 for work. Now I am retired. To say that Jack was a unique fellow is an understatement. He had an outsized personality and a pretty big ego to go with it. It makes me sad to think that he died of cancer more than 15 years ago. He was only 5 years older than me. Later on I played with John Brunschwyler and Barb Diederich in DeSoto along with Howard Parker and Archie Warnock. We had a good bit of fun playing together and I remember well playing the Tiffany Tavern, Sputnik Cafe and other places around Baltimore, DC and Annapolis. It was after the dissolution of DeSoto that Barb, Howard and I formed a trio playing Americana, with Howard swapping between steel guitar and dobro and me playing guitar and sometimes mandolin. If I were to hazard a guess, it has been around 17 years since that trio died a slow and natural death, mostly because I lacked interest in promoting the band since it was work that I found difficult and didn't have enough time to spend trying to make connections that would lead to more gigs. I think I have dozens if not hundreds of copies of the CD we produced back in 2006.
