The DC Bluegrass Union is hosting a 4th of July Potluck Celebration, and all are invited. Bring your instruments! The date is Monday, July 4, from 1:00-4:00p. Soft drinks will be provided; bring a potluck and beverage of your choice if you like. Rain or shine!

For Father’s Day 2022, here is a live version of "That Silver-Haired Daddy Of Mine",

Gene Autry & Jimmy Long’s 1935 hit; it was the first hit song of American cowboy

entertainer Gene Autry. The 1931 single achieved greatest popularity in 1935 on

Vocalion, selling 5 million copies. It was featured in the 1935 Western films Tumbling

Tumbleweeds and The Phantom Empire.

The song was covered by The Everly Brothers on their 1958 album Songs Our

Daddy Taught Us and also by Simon & Garfunkel on their albums Old Friends

and Live 1969.

I self-recorded this with Peter Sittner on bass, and flat picked the solos on my Martin

Marquis, real time.

[dcab-l] Hey Everybody- DCBU's looking for some help...

Putting it out there, if you've got an idea on what the community needs, let us know. If you're willing to get involved that would be great.

We're pivoting away from the large format festival formula and looking to do more local shows that are community based, with jamming, networking and building community.

The recent birthday event celebrating Bob Perilla would be one example. Moose Jaw played two great sets, being joined by a bunch of local guests, including, of course, Bob. The night was super, and gave us a good idea of what could be improved.

You are welcome to comment one way or another.

We've also been actively arranging and supporting jams in DC and Maryland. The Dupont Circle/O Street jams is popular, and membership dollars go to support the jam and the venue the O Street Mansion. Likewise for the Hyattsville jam hosted by Barb Diederich at the Archie Edwards Foundation. We're building momentum- and relationships- that support the musical community at large.

Were looking to expand our support of our local professionals. We've done it before and we'll do it again, but needing some assistance. If you have an idea- or a desire - to assist and help make this happen let me know.

[dcab-l] Highlighting Tad Marks: "Body and Soul"

Songwriters & Music Lovers:

"Body and Soul" was written by Virginia Stauffer, with the proper title: “With Body and

Soul”. It was the B-side of Bill Monroe’s 45 rpm “Fireball Mail” in 1967, and was

included a decade later on Bill Monroe Sings Bluegrass, Body and Soul.

Few female songwriters were getting cuts in 1967, especially in bluegrass, but Virginia

Stauffer, thanks to Monroe, was an exception, as he cut five of her songs. Though

not as well-known as other Monroe classics, its popularity has grown over the years.

Bands covering this song include the Kentucky Headhunters and New Grass Revival.

Monroe duetted with Waylon Jennings on the song in 1983.

The treat in this cut is the fiddle of Tad Marks! I self-recorded this take, with Peter

Sitner on bass, and flat picked the solos on my Martin, real time. Afterward, I thought to

add fiddle background on all 10 songs (Bluegrass and Originals), and Tad agreed to

record them at Gantt Kushner’s studio Gizmo Recording.

The May, 2022 edition of Bluegrass Unlimited contains a lovely story about Tad

Marks: Journey of a Bluegrass Fiddler, written by Washington area musician Tom

Knowles.
