[dcab-l] Martin Guitar Christmas: Do You Hear What I Hear
Friends of Christmas Present:
Here's a live All Mixed Up Christmas song.
Do You Hear What I Hear was written in October 1962, with lyrics by Noël
Regney and music by Gloria Shayne. The pair, married at the time, wrote it as a
plea for peace during the Cuban Missile Crisis. It has sold tens of millions of
copies and has been covered by hundreds of artists.
Bing Crosby made the song into a hit when he recorded his own version on
October 21, 1963. Crosby also performed the song on a Bob Hope Christmas
Special on December 13 of that year.
The band:
Barry Wendell Rhythm Guitar and Vocals
Ed Schaeffer Martin Guitar and Harmony
Greg Nelson Bass

[dcab-l] Woody & Dad sing "Hit Came Upon a Midnight Clear"
Friends of Christmas Present:
This is the 13th year my son Woody and I have recorded a Christmas song. Others
we've done in years past:
2009 "Star of Bethlehem"
2010 "Silent Night"
2011 "Silver Bells"
2012 "Blue Christmas"
2013 "White Christmas"
2014 "Winter Wonderland"
2015 "The Friendly Beasts"
2016 "Away in a Manger"
2017 “The First Noel”
2018 “Santa Clause is Coming to Town”
2019 “Holly Jolly Christmas”
2020 “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”
For 2021 we've recorded "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear”. Woody did the
mixing, played slide guitar (dobro), and sang tenor and baritone harmonies. Dad sang
lead and played the guitar and bass. I used an 09 Martin Marquis for guitar, and my
Gold Tone MicroBass for the low end.
"It Came Upon a Midnight Clear” was written on a cold December 25th in 1849 by
Edmund Hamilton Sears, a retiring clergyman. Scarred by the issue of slavery, and with
the drumbeat of revolution in Europe, and the Mexican-American war still fresh in his
mind, the Reverend Sears composed his poem while serving as a minister for the
Unitarian Church in Wayland, Massachusetts. A year later he asked his good friend
Richard Storrs Willis, a distinguished composer of mainly hymn music, to write a flowing
melody for his poem. What resulted was “that glorious song of old”.
This hymn was quite unusual for its day, as most traditional carols stressed the nativity
of Jesus Christ. But the social message of "peace on the earth – good will to men", was
in keeping with the Reverend's Unitarian faith and its allowance for anti-war sentiments.
Please enjoy! Woody and I wish everyone a happy and prosperous Holiday Season!

[dcab-l] Bluegrass Comeback to Southern Maryland Concert Series*2022
Bringing back the concert series at a new venue
While one venue closes, another one opens the door to welcome a Bluegrass comeback.
After a 15-year stint of the American Legion Bluegrass Concert Series, the chapter of that book ends. The decision to end the series that Jay Armsworthy had worked endlessly to establish was when the American Legion Post 238 in Hughesville, MD decided not to open their doors for public events. With the determination to continue, Jay has found a new home for his Bluegrass series. The Calvert Elks #2620 in Prince Frederick, MD is welcoming the Bluegrass fans to their hall which is a larger venue with comfortable cushioned chairs. As of now, all the show details will continue the same as before. Doors will open at Noon with the show starting at 2:00 pm and food and beverages will be available for sale at Noon for a separate price. Tickets for the shows will remain $20.00 per person at the door with children under 12 free with a paid adult.
To start off the Bluegrass Comeback series, will be the Larry Stephenson Band on Sunday January 9, 2022. Always a favorite to Southern Maryland Bluegrass fans. Larry is from King George, VA, but makes his home in Nashville, TN. He will kick off his 2022 touring schedule by joining us at the Calvert Elks.
The remainder of the series will be on Sunday February 20, 2022, with Danny Paisley & the Southern Grass and Sunday March 13, 2022, with Sideline Bluegrass Band. Troy Jones will continue to be our sound engineer for the event. Opening each show will be show host, Jay Armsworthy, along with a different special guest for each show. Another special show will be scheduled in April of 2022 but not yet determined. The Calvert Elks #2620 is located at 1015 Dares Beach Road in Prince Frederick, MD
