[dcab-l] Fiddle Tune: Squirrel Hunter
Music Lovers & Songwriters:
Squirrel Hunter is an Allegheny tune from Western Pennsylvania, which moved down the
spine of the Blue Ridge into W. Va. The Squirrel Hunter title came from Pennsylvania
fiddlers and fifers and it is said that the Squirrel Hunters were a group of woodsmen
who helped ward off the Confederates in Ohio. In W.Va it's called Dan Friend's Piece or
Rainy Day. It came into the urban old-time and bluegrass scene through fiddler John
Hartford on Rounder CD 0392, “Wild Hog in the Brush and a Bunch of Others You Might
Not Have Heard” (1996), but was played here and there before him. The W.Va versions
are easy to find and listen to, but one must dig for the Pennsylvania recordings.
This tune was known in Pennsylvania primarily as a fife "stop beat" piece, though Bayard
has identified it as a member of "one of the most widespread and ramifying of our
British Isles melodic families." This very old tune family has innumerable variants and
forms in most of the folk modes, in quick and slow tempi, and in 2/4, 4/4, 6/8, and ¾
times. Some variants include the titles: "The Oyster Wife's Rant," "The Haughs of
Cromdale," "Wate You How the Play Began," "The Hillside," "Welcome Home," and
"(Fare Thee Well) Sweet Killaloe."
This live recording took place at Cactus Flats Restaurant north of Fredrick, Md.
