[dcab-l] East of Monroe

What a great way to fight the snow - hot acoustic music.  Last night EAST OF MONROE made their second appearance at the Weekend Bluegrass Concert Series in Herndon, Virginia and was it hot?  You bet it was!  Great vocal harmony and magnificent instrumentals plus a ton of fun too describes the evening.  A great show all around and a great way to break out of the cabin fever syndrome.  Many thanks to EAST OF MONROE for a grand night of entertainment and for being just real folks you like to hang around with. Thanks also to our patrons for taking the challenge of dodging parking lot snow piles to be with us.

[dcab-l] Music for Life needs guitar teachers

Hi All,

http://www.musicforlife.org/

I am sending this out my jam friends on behalf of the Music for Life
organization, a NoVa/Metro group that provides "after-school music
programs for youth and underserved adult populations; drumming
sessions for younger youth, acoustic guitar lessons for older
students, and electric and bass guitar lessons for experienced
students. "

I teach for them at a weekly after-school class in Sterling when
school is in session.

They have an immediate need for a teacher in the Centreville VA area.
I hope that one of you can help.

They may also need teachers or classroom assistants in other Metro locations.

If you can help, please email me and I will provide more specifics.

Thanks!

Best regards,

Dirk Johnson

[dcab-l] Tom & Ben Paley at IMT on Feb. 8

Tom & Ben Paley in an IMT Icon Concert
Monday, February 8, 2016, 7:30 pm.
Saint Mark Presbyterian Church, 10701 Old Georgetown Rd, Rockville, MD, 20852
Tickets: $15 advance, $20 door.
Students (with ID) & Children: $12 advance, $17 door.
Available at http://www.imtfolk.org

IMT presents a true Folk Icon: Tom Paley, one of the founders of the New Lost City Ramblers, and his son, Ben Paley.

Tom Paley recorded his first album Folk Songs of the Southern Appalachian Mountains, for Jac Holzman's then-new Elektra Records in 1953. On May 25, 1958, Tom, John Cohen and Mike Seeger played together live on air for John Dildine's weekly folk music radio show on WASH-FM: this was the first appearance of what later became the New Lost City Ramblers.

Paley later said:

"When we formed The New Lost City Ramblers it was the kind of thing I'd been doing for quite a few years.... It didn't feel particularly revolutionary to me but I understood we had quite an impact on young people like Dylan."

At age 84, Tom's second album for Hornbeam Recordings, "Paley & Son," was released in May 2015, and is shared with his son Ben. It follows on from the roaring success of "Roll On, Roll On". Tom is passing on the baton to Ben who weighs in with some wonderful fiddle playing.

We booked this show at short notice so we wouldn't miss the opportunity to present the extraordinary musician.  Please join us for the show, and help us spread the word!

[YEP-DC] Reminder: Color Vowel Chart Workshop on Friday!

We're back to school on Wednesday, and there's still time to register for Friday's Color Vowel Chart Workshop, hosted by E.L. Haynes Public Charter School!  This workshop will provide you with a new innovative tool for helping your students prounounce those tricky vowel sounds that don't always fit "the rules".  It can help you and your students feel relief when decoding and encoding because there are less "rules" to remember!  Please see the attached flyer and original email below for more information.  Then click here to register! Please reach out to me at dmartins@elhaynes.org with any questions!

Thanks,
Deena Martins
Director of English Language Learning
E.L. Haynes Public Charter School

-------------------

Do you have students who struggle to remember all the vowel sounds in the English language?  Do they find long vs. short vowels confusing?  Do they often forget that vowel teams often make more than one sound?

E.L. Haynes is proud to offer a two-session workshop that will provide you with a new tool for attacking the pronunciation of vowels, called the Color Vowel Chart.  This tool is being used with students of all grade levels in schools across the country, like in Wilmington, Delaware, Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Pueblo, Colorado.  It is also being used locally with adults in English training programs in Rockville, MD and even by the U.S. State Department! Check out some testimonials from past workshop participants:

"One of my favorite things about the chart is the way that it visually brings attention to the differences among the English vowels--differences that students may not be able to hear. I also like how the color vowel chart has allowed me to incorporate pronunciation into other aspects of my classes. While students are working together on any task, if I hear a major pronunciation problem I can say, "change your vowel from 'blue' to 'mustard' for that word," and the student is usually able to improve her pronunciation." - Jody Gabler, ESL Teacher

"This training was phenomenal. I learned an innovative but easy way to teach students about the many different sounds that vowels can make. The Color Vowel Chart is easy to learn and uses the different modalities of learning so [it] reaches every type of learner." - ESL Teacher, Pueblo City Schools

"Wonderful session. Stellar presenters. Great activities. Best session I've been to. They were on fi-yur!" - Participant, TESOL Toronto 2015

We are looking for at least 20 teachers or specialists who will join us for these interactive workshop sessions.  Please see the attached flyer for more details.

The total cost for both sessions combined is $125 per person.  Each participant will receive a certificate of participation for 6 hours worth of professional development.  Please email Deena Martins at dmartins@elhaynes.org to express interest.  Registration details will follow.
