[YEP-DC] New YEP-DC Blog Post: The Bogeyman of Ed Policy

When inBloom -- the nonprofit organization that sought to collect and store student data for educators -- shut down, it was considered a win for privacy advocates. But what about the educators who had plenty to gain from using such data? Recess blogger Ashley Mitchel reached out to Brennan McMahon Parton, an expert at Data Quality Campaign, to learn more about the real story behind student data, how it's currently being used, and the protections out there for data privacy. See their full conversation in Ashley's latest post, "The Bogeyman of Ed Policy," here: http://www.youngedprofessionals.org/yep-dc-recess-blog/the-bogeyman-of-ed-policy

[YEP-DC] Job opportunities at Council for a Strong America

The Council for a Strong America has two job openings that I thought YEP-DC members may be interested in -- one with my organization (Mission: Readiness) and one with ReadyNation, an organization of business leaders supporting investments in early childhood education. Both openings are at the Senior Associate level and could be great opportunities for folks you know who have done education policy work, campaign/advocacy work, worked on Capitol Hill or for a state legislature, and/or work at a membership organization.

Here are links to the job descriptions:

Senior Associate, Mission: Readiness
Senior Associate, ReadyNation

Please let me know if you think of anyone in particular who would be a good fit for either.

Thanks for your help!

Best,

Jamie

[dcab-l] IBMA Week is Calling!

The countdown is on to the IBMA festivities in Raleigh! A week from now I will be finishing up one of the morning seminars at the convention and planning where-to next…

For those of you who think that the business convention is all that is going on next week, let me give you a quick look at what will be happening. Please read on down and look especially well at what goes on for FREE!

There are really three parts to IBMA week – the IBMA business conference, the Wide Open Bluegrass paid ticket festival and the Raleigh/PNC Wide Open Bluegrass free festival.

The business conference is a paid event that runs from Tues. morning through the Awards Show on Thurs. evening. It is well worth attending and I encourage you to do so – I believe there are registration spaces left.

The ticketed WOB Festival takes place in the Red Hat Amphitheater and the convention center ballroom and features the cream of the bluegrass crop – the best seats are probably gone and cost big-bucks, but it is where the big-time shows are.  See line up - https://ibma.org/world-of-bluegrass/wide-open-bluegrass/lineup

The best thing about the week is the free street festival! There are seven or so stages in the area downtown near the convention center – this replaces "Fan-Fest" if you have done that in previous years. It starts at noon on Friday and runs through 11pm Saturday night. The schedule is huge – too many names to list, but lots of the biggest names mixed in with great new and well-aged local and regional performers. https://ibma.org/press/archives/full-performance-schedule-announced-wide-open-bluegrass-streetfest   Good parking nearby for $7 (last year) a day w/return. The Trade Show in the convention center opens to the public on Thursday, I believe, and there is pickin' going on everywhere! The hotels downtown will be filled with jamming – even during the evenings early in the week. Pinecone.org has added a 5th Monday evening jam at the Busy Bee – nice venue! So the bottom line is that you just have to get to Raleigh and find some accomodations – no need to buy tickets to anything…  The only thing I would consider paying for is a pass for the "Bluegrass Ramble" – the showcases in the venues around downtown – if you come in early in the week. The Ramble runs every evening….  https://ibma.org/world-of-bluegrass/bluegrass-ramble  $60 IBMA members/$75 others – I believe they are purchased at the registration desk in the convention center.

It will be a party not-to-be-missed – hoping to see you all there!

Bruce Day
